GOING TO ALASKA

HI, WERE GETTING READY TO HEAD WEST TO ALASKA, JUST WANTED TO KNOW IF ANY ONE EVER TOOK IN A SHOT GUN, AND IF THERE WERE ANY ISSU, WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO ENTER ALASKA. IF YOU HAVE A HAND GUN HAVE YOU CHECK IT INTO A GUN SHOP TO HOLD WHILE GOING THUR CANADA, AND HOW WAS IT, THANKS CHARLES N.C.5886 2000 MAGNA

When we went there I took a 30-06. I called and asks if a handgun with a 6" barrel was allowed. All they said
Was we prefer you don't bring in handguns. Now their rules/law say 4" or longer is permissible. I did not want
To leave the border and find someplace to store it, so I brought the rifle. They charged me $35 for the permit.

If I was U I would make sure the 2nd and 3rd round was a slug shot.

You will most likely need to purchase a permit/license from Canada in order to carry your shotgun or rifle into/thru Canada. I believe it's only good for 60 days, so you may have to buy another one when you want to head back South. You best contact Canadian Customs prior to heading up. Could save you a headache or two.

You will not need any firearms, unless you go out looking for trouble. The Canadians will have a field day with you even if you get all the required documents. Just go and enjoy your trip, its still pretty cold icy and snowy this time of year fyi.

We did Alaska independently for 2 months.
Fairbanks, Denali, Kenai, Stewart/ Hyde. Etc. Never needed firearm. Did carryBear spray, bells & whistle. No encounters and we did hikes.
Canada totally anti 2nd amendment. If they find one bullet in your coach/ toad, they'll toss your coach & toad to no end. You'll have a problem.
I wouldn't bring a firearm, not even a shotgun with the so called permit.
Heard too many horror stories about this issue.
But definitely go to Alaska. Well worth it.

If your too worried about crossing the border, you can always ship the firearm to a gun store in Alaska. Saves all the problems at the border crossing.

Perhaps you should be interested in its Articles of Confederation. The vast majority of Canadians seem not to need guns to validate their masculinity. If you meet a bear, ring a bell loudly. You'll both be safer.

I traveled with a firearm under lock and had my young family with me. The firearm was not in fear of bears but humans.

EZ PEEZEE, just go the RCMP site (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/fs-fd/visit-visite-eng.htm) download form 5589 and fill it out. Don't sign it until you are at customs, it must be signed in front of a customs officer. Do NOT CARRY it into the customs office. They will need to go into your vehicle to verify the Serial number.
Do not be surprised if the first contact asks you in several different ways if you have a pistol or pistol ammo. They seem to expect every American to have one.
We were never hassled by Canadian officials. In fact when we returned from Skagway into Canada I informed the officer that we had a shotgun and he didn't even want to see out paperwork.
Did we need a firearm? No, but we also did not need our fire extinguisher, spare tire, extra belt and fuel filters. If you feel more comfortable with a firearm don't let the naysayers stop you. Everyone has their own reasons.

I live in Alaska and travel with my firearms, minus my handguns. Never an issue in Canada for me. I ship my handguns via Alaska Airlines and pick them up at Air Cargo. I only needed a firearm for bear on one occasion, so I wouldn't say that you don't need one. Bear Spray is pretty effective, but more so on humans. My son is an Alaska State Trooper and I am retired from Federal Law Enforcement, and he has been charged by brown bear, and the spray did nothing to deter the bear. His shotgun, loaded with slugs and 00 buckshot did stop it. He has had this occur more than once. Be proficient and carry, lest you become sorry.

Yes carry your handgun especially if are going to Boone dock any.
It's easy just call the RCMP firearms office they will tell you what to do. To carry a handgun you must obtain a transport authorization form and follow the instructions. They then allow you 7 days to transport through Canada. Also on the form it ask if and when you will return. Easy

The longs also go on another form. They do not require a transport form but it's another nothing to it.
