Dash heat front booster pump

Did I read somewhere when the front dash heat booster pumps begins to leak that most folks remove the pump an splice the hoses together. I know I read it somewhere that there not really necessary. Maybe it was the back one, I don't remember. Anyway my front one is leaking and I want to make sure it's not needed before I do away with it.

Its the rear pump in the hot engine compartment that fails we by pass. I by passed mine in 2010 as I remember. TW Insall 2004 Intrigue 11731

Yep, they all leak. Just bypass it and pull the fuse in front run bay. It is not needed. When I want heat at the dash it only takes about 5 min to get warm without it. It was a lousy design, located next to the turbo and running all the time the ignition is on, whether or not you wanted heat.

The main one that starts leaking by far is the rear one. Neither one is needed, certainly not on my coach with my C12 caterpillar. I've been in Sub-Zero weather with the rear removed and the power to the front one disconnected with plenty of heat.

Greg are you saying neither is needed ? My front one is leaking. I also noticed my fuses are not marked except with numbers. Most coaches I've owned there is a list of what each fuse is for.

Brian, I was referring to the dash heat pump mounted on the engine. It was out of a Bluebird, so sometimes called a "school bus pump". It is in a horrible location next to turbo on a Cat C 13. It gets too much heat and runs all the time.

MP 29924 should be the part number. As far as I understand, you need the front one. Most of the Affinity and Magnas had two (one rear, one front). The rear one is the one people eliminate because having just the front one provides enough heat, and, when the rear starts leaking good it can leave you stranded (loss of engine coolant). It's in a hard to get to place in engine compartment.
I just had a new front one installed and am going to bypass the rear. I think I'm going to have to access it from within the bedroom.

I've understood from numerous posts that the "school-bus pump" is best done away with since if it busts a gut it'll empty your coolant in minutes. But having said that, I asked my Mech and he said not to bother. If you bypass it you'll find front heat coming a lot more slowly, but that should be the only effect.

I took mine out also! Lost the pump at the bottom of the I-5, (grapevine) in Calif. Lost all coolant !! I have NOT noticed any difference.

Replaced all my hoses with ( cyclone ) hoses. Just one less thing to worry about! that "Bus pump" was the weakest in the chain!

My opinion......Good decision.

Caution on removing the fuse for the bus pumps. On my coach the mirror heaters are on the same 20 amp fuse. Of course, stay in warm part of the country and you won't need either mirror heaters or dash heater.

The "school bus pump" they used have seals in them and they do tend to leak after awhile. The pumps are expensive but can be rebuilt with a $25 rebuild kit. The problem is when they leak depending on how the pump is positioned the coolant may run down in to the motor and damage it, making the pump not rebuild-able.

I replaced both my pumps with "sealless" pumps that will not leak. The pump I used is:

Someone else already covered checking what the fuse powers before removing it.

Rear bus type pump on a 1998 Gillig chassis. 1" hoses appeared to be glued on. Found on ebay for under $80.00.

im Curious whether these pumps exist on all coaches? Or just the longer 40' and up sizes? I have a 2002 36' Intrigue with ISL engine and looked unsuccessfully today for that pump. Might someone know where to look... top side or bottom of engine?

Have noticed that during a travel season I top off the antifreeze using about a gallon total for the season, about 9000 miles. Figured I should find that pump before I regret not doing so.

I’ve also got a 2002 Intrigue 36-ft and some years ago I had the rear pump bypassed as a precautionary thing. So, yes, it did exist on my Intrigue.Steve B #11382  Sent from Mail for Windows 10
