Jeep Grand Cherokee

Haven't had the wheel problem, but have a question about another Jeep problem. While sitting here at Beaudry's waiting for the CCI Pre Rally, I have talked to a few Grand Cherokee owners and we all have noticed that after towing the car for awhile, when you get in to shift out of towing mode, there is the smell of burnt oil. No one seemed to know what is going on. At the last oil change, I brought this up with the dealer and they checked and could find nothing wrong with either the oil or transmission. I use RED Line synthetic oil in mine but others were using regular oil. Anyone else had this problem.

A Honda tech explained to me that road oil is constantly thrown up on the oil pan, but the engine heat tends to burn it off as we drive. Of course, when we tow there is no engine heat, so we build up a lot of oil. That is what I smell burning after I drive the CRV.

Yes, I've noticed the smell, too, but all seems well. The explanation about it being road oil, etc. sounds right to me. No worry!

I drive a Jeep Cherokee. Never had the problem of the wheels locking.... (except the time either my wife or I did it... results: two new front tires). However, we do have "the smell". I don't buy the road oil theory. I get the smell as soon as I start the engine with no warm up time.
I've towed my Cherokee for about 100,000 miles (plus almost 50,000 driving miles), have always had the smell and no problems observed. I would be interested in a good explanation.

I tow a Jeep Liberty and also get "the smell;" however, mine has a more tire like scent. I have often checked the tires and found no unusual wear.
The toad follows me everywhere with no complaints or problems, and runs just fine, so I'm assuming everything is OK.

When we first started towing we would get a burnt rubber smell without an engine start. It would soon go away and everything ran fine. During the last 20,000 or so the smell has gone away and I don't worry about.

We have towed 2 different Cherokee's (not Grand) and now toe a Dakoda same smell with each.

Are all of these Jeep problems with automatics? We pull a Jeep stick with no problems. Well, unless the co-pilot doesn't catch the fact that I left the brake set.

I don't know about the rest, but mine is an automatic. Interesting to see that others have the same oder. As posted earlier, I don't go for the oil on the engine theory either. The smell is there when you open the door. Maybe something to the exhaust from the coach idea. Thanx for the input.

When I started this topic, I thought that I stated that the smell was there when you opened the door to get in the car, before ever starting the engine. It makes no difference weather it is hot weather or cold weather. So far the exhaust fumes from the coach makes the most sense. Thanks for all your input.
