Air Bag Replacement

Yahoo Message Number: 115345
I had to have the Driverside Tag Axle AIR BAG replaced.

They replaced it aFIRESTONE AIR BAG PART # W01-358-9459

Letting those who own a 2007 Allure with tag that info. Because what
the charged me and what I could have purchased it on-line if I would have
known the part number, I could have save $$$$.

According to them this bag was leaking. All other bags looked good and were not
Leaking. I would have normally replaced both, but I have faith in Colton Truck Service

So, they changed only one bag and not the valve. Just wondering when should you also change the valve as well?

I have heard they are hard to come by? I want to buy one and keep it onboard. Do you know if a 2007 Magna uses the same size?

Dave......

I have all my work done at Colton Truck also!!! If Ed or Rich or Mikie only decided to replace on then the other one must have been still in good shape. Ed replaced both of my bags on my 2004 , 33 foot Allure a year ago. Yep! had to pull off the bags to see the number! My bags were no longer available so Ed had to modify the bolt pattern a bit to put the new Firestone bags on. Both of my bags the rubber came off in my hand easily!!! Also had Ed replace the "6-pack" air valves up front also. I do really trust those guys! Ed has been handling my coach exclusively for the last several years! They do a pretty good job there!!! If you see Ed tell him Scotty says "HI" good Luck to you Sir!

Brett,
Sorry I have no idea if that bag will or would fit. That is the minor problem
When U need to replace a bag(s). The part # is on part of the bag that U
Can't see until the bag is removed. Have read the CC has that info but it
Sometime very difficult or impossible for them to return phone call requests.

Scott,
When I had it in there for the yearly service. Mike was the person who recommended the replacement.
Ed, was the person person who supervised the replacement. I also trust them. Also, they checked/adjusted
The ride heights valves.

I would also have replaced both air-bags. Just cautious, I guess. But if one failed...

As to the cost: we all know that if we can find parts online, we're going to get them for a lot less $$$ than buying with dealer markup from a service facility. But let's keep in mind that the service shop has to stay in business, and part of that business model is getting a markup on parts they install. I would never buy a part online then ask a shop to install it for me. That's just not fair to the business.

So IMHO - if you're doing the repair work yourself, by all means get the parts as cheaply as possible, which usually means online. But if you want competent service shops to survive (so you can go there when you need them!) then don't begrudge them the higher cost of the parts that they install for you.

All four airbags are cracked but not yet leaking. I tried to get them replaced in the spring but the wrong replacements came in. The numbers I was given are 1T15M2, front and W01-675-8181, rear. Supposedly these numbers came directly off the bags once they were removed. I have found the part number for the fronts but not the rear ones. I would like to get them replaced before I head back to Phoenix in the fall.

If anyone has had their air bags replaced can you please give me the correct numbers and a source for purchasing said items?

Judy,

The W01-675-8181 were a special order for Country Coach and no longer being manufactured. I replaced my rears with W01-358-8184. They seem to be working just fine.

I believe the new part number for the Firestone fronts is W01-358-8931 according to the Firestone cross reference chart.

Might I ask what place do you plan to take them in Phoenix?

Just a generic comment on air bags, not specific to this thread.

As I researched what was to me new experience, the care and feeding of our first DP, a low mileage unit about 6 years old - I researched air bags.

I wanted to know a few things:
-What is the expected life of an air bag?
-Do they age out, and does usage and environment effect life?
-Should they be treated with anything, like Aerospace 303?

I read lots of threads, on lots of boards and came up with a few conclusions:
-Yes, usage and environment can effect air bag life. A combo of normal miles of driving impact via suspension movement, the number of times bags are deflated/extended during air leveling.
-While products like Aerospace 303 should not hurt, each chassis mechanic I've asked at various locations. And feedback from other long term DP owners, indicate they doubt any increase in life usage.

No real conclusion on if total deflation say when leveling in extreme angles, or just dumping to get the coach as low as possible - has any more impact of the life of a bag, then normal wear and tear of deflate/inflate movement. Many reinforced the importance of the shape of shocks business, to ensure it helps minimize over extension of a bag in extreme leveling.

And, shallow cracking of the external layer is normal. When inspecting, look for deeper more severe cracking, as those are signs of distressed bags.

Some people had coaches with air bags that were still OEM from the early 90's. Others have had air bags failures in coaches 3-5 years of age. Not enough info to concluded of chassis design or weight of coaches played into these large variances or not. Though one gent felt the air bags of the early 90, were made of better materials and designed for longer life. (An opinion, that I could not validate, and or dispute.)

I also found this link, that I thought was pretty good:

https://www.truckspring.com/blog/post/2011/05/05/nine-easy-steps-to-a-long-life-for-your-air-springs

So what? Well just info sharing:)!

Oh, our coach was built in Sept of 2003. And we're on OEM bags, and yearly inspection seems to indicate they're still in good shape.

Best to all,
Smitty

A question out of ignorance, but what kind of money are we talking about to have airbags replaced?
