Stalling engine continues?

I have posted this issue several times in the past year. While traveling at any speed, the engine shuts down. About half the time I can restart by tapping the throttle pedal or turn key off and on. I have replaced the ignition solenoid and I watch the coolant tank. I just drove 700 miles from Cape Breton to Portland Maine without an issue. Yesterday I drove 100 miles into New Hampshire and it stalled about one dozen times!!! I recall one member increasing his solenoid from 100 amp to 200 amp, but he did not state the reason. I have to believe someone else has had this problem. Thanks for the breakdown lane!!

How about your fuel filter? Have you changed it lately? You could be getting bad fuel somewhere. How about your fuel cut off switch, the switch that turns your fuel on and off with the ignition?

Just my thoughts. Hope you find the problem.

Have you had your lift pump rebuilt and had Cat run a tests on your ECM? And of course you replaced your fuel filters recently and there are no signs of fuel leaks on the ground when you park. Some folks have had issues with air getting into the fuel lines between the fuel tank and the injection pump. TWInsall 2004 Intrigue 11731

If you're talking about the engine completely cutting off, I had this same problem and it turned out to be the ignition switch. It won't throw a code as the ECM just thinks your turning the engine off with the key.

I have had a similar problem with my 1998 Allure. I changed fuel filters, lift Pump with no luck. I finally tightened the fittings to my fuel water separator and it cured the problem. I was sucking air. No fuel was leaking around the fittings. Hope this helps.

Your issue sounds much like ours after becoming the third owner of our 42' 2000 Affinity. On our trip home the cruse control kept disengaging and the jake brake would activate (switch was on). At first I couldn't tell which was cause vs effect. Then on my first major trip from SC to FL, the transmission would periodically shift out of the current gear and back abruptly - feeling like I had hit a pothole. On the return trip I lost any feel of the accelerator about a half dozen times. At first I thought the engine had quit so I shifted to neutral to coast further to a safe pull off, then I saw the tac showing idle rpms and I could "blip" the throttle again. So back into gear and I never made a full stop.

A friend who works for a Cat dealership suggested that the transmission/engine was loosing "speed" information and thus did't know what gear it should be in, etc.
A CC tech suspected a "terminal resistor" at either end of the J1939 "data link" was bad so "data" was not being communicated properly between the E.C.U., E.C.M., transmission selector, etc. (In fact, the local Allison shop tried to run a diagnostic test, but said all they could see from the rear service port was my ABS brakes so they stopped any further work - not "knowing" my coach.)

On my all electric coach (MAT) the deutsch3-pin connector/resistor packs can be found at drops 1 and 240 (230 for MHA) and they terminate blue twisted wire pair K900 and blue twisted wire pair K990. As I remember the CC tech told me to measure the resistance between C and D terminals of the larger rear service port, but I don't remember the various ohm readings and their meanings. However, my rear terminal resistor was visible on top of the passenger side frame rail aft of the engine and easy to check out. When I unplugged it, that terminal resistor measured ok at 50 ohms. When I found the forward terminal in the run bay (behind the forward vertical post and next to the generator) it failed the 50 ohm test. A replacement from CC was less than $10 and since I had earlier paid Allison $200 for the diagnostic test, they "flashed" the transmission to get rid of the invalid shift memory. No further problems.

More recently I had problems with the ignition solenoid in the run bay, but the symptoms were clearly different. If the engine was off, it might take several key turns before any starting action. Then I began to notice while running, that my Silverleaf dash and GPS units would start rebooting more and more frequently indicating a momentary loss of electrical power. But I never lost engine power. Finally I lost electric power in all my ignition circuits (brake/turn lights, Silverleaf dash, etc) when the solenoid failed completely, but was able to drive to a repair facility before I killed the engine with no restart possibility.

Sorry for writing a book, but maybe some of the details will be useful. Good luck.

Thank you all for sharing this experience. I will get a Cat tech to replace my thermostat, coolant temp sensor and maybe the ignition. I stated this in a prior post that when the engine stalls it will not restart until the silver leaf engine coolant temp returns to the real temperature and not "0"
