Odor in Jeep Cherokee

I have not had the wheel lock-up problem. When I put the ignition key in the correct position I always make sure I can turn the wheels manually. I have noticed that there is an odor that smells like hot oil in the car after towing it. I just thought it was exhaust from the diesel that had enetered the car. The peopel that I have service the car have noted no oil or transmission problems. Rich, 2003 Intrique 11641.

Rich,

We get the same smell for a time after towing our Envoy. I figured it was a result of the engine not running, pumping lubricant around while towing. It has not been any problem.

Hi All,

I have been reading the post about the smell after towing. Well here is my 10 cents worth.I'v been at this old game for 42 years now so I may have some insight to this. When you flat tow with the transfer case in neutral, only the back gears in the case turn which causes the oil to fome (will be worse with syn. oil).the easyest way to cure the smell is to relocate the breather to the rear of jeep, from right under the front seat.

As for the wheels locking upon turns, dose the ing. lock realy turn to lock poss?I'll go next door to jeep and seewhat I can find out, if you think it dose. We flat tow our wrangler with key in first poss. with no troble.A thuogt is wour tow bar sit flat?Or go up or down?

We tow a 95 jeep wrangler 5 speed 4 wheels down with the transmission in neutral and the transfer case in neutral and the key in the first position to unlock the steering wheel so the front wheels do not lock up.
We have been towing this jeep for 9 years with no problems. If you are smelling something burning it is your front wheels that are not turning and are in the locked position if you do not have the key in.

I know 5 years is a good track record, but doesn't your manual say you should tow in 5th gear? My '92 does.

Dave, actually I think it does, however we have been doing the neutral/neutral for so long with no consequences. Also, jeep racks up 0 miles on odometer when being towed.
