Breakdown!

We were traveling north Saturday on I-81 in Virginia when our motorhome lost air in its rear suspension. So we pulled into the parking lot of a closed-down Stuckey's Pecan Shoppe (exit 240) and called Coach-Net (http://www.coach-net.com) on our cell phone. Their tech said that the rear height control valve's actuating lever arms apparently became disconnected.
He then dispatched Tony's Road Service & Truck Garage, Inc., from Waynesboro, VA, who arrived shortly, agreed with the diagnosis (he saw that the lever arms were hanging) and quickly repaired the problem. We only had to pay $55 of the $212.30 bill. Coach-Net will pay the rest.
So, the bottom line is that we're glad we're members of an Emergency Road Service (Coach-Net in particular); that they dispatched Tony, who provided courteous/professional service; and that, at the time of the incident, our motorhome had nearly full diesel, LP and water tanks; nearly empty holding tanks; and a nearly full refrigerator, all of which would've enabled us to easily spend the weekend in the parking lot waiting to be rescued . But all's well that ends well.

Sounds like your tow service gave you great service. Did Tony know to reset the ride height? If not it needs to be checked and adjusted if needed.

We also had a ride height control valve fail. On I-5 north of Los Angeles in a rain storm that was turning into a snow storm late Sunday afternoon-ugly
Fortunately, Country Coach had a tech available we could reach by cell phone. By removing a certain fuse you can bypass the ride height control and use the manual controls you have for leveling the coach and be on your way. I later replaced both valves (rear) even though it was the right one that failed.
The event for me started as an intermittent grinding noise from the rear followed by a burnt rubber smell. It was the coach frame coming down on the rear outside tire. I was told that CC had received a number of poor valves and it's no longer a problem.

Dick,

I totally agree with you on Coach-Net. They did the same thing for me when I needed help. They are great people to have on your side.
BTW, I had to be towed 95 miles. I am sure the bill to do that towing would have exceeded $1000.00. I did not have to pay a dime.
And the people they send to help were top notch also.

Why did you have to pay $55 of the bill? Is it not 100% coverage? If not, I will switch back to Good Sam. There was never any charge to me when they came to my rescue (many times) with my previous coach.

Premium will be due next month and I will need to make a decision.

In my opinion Coach net is 2nd to Good Sam in quality of service. I was with Good Sam for years but when I bought this motorhome Coach Net was included and so I kept it. The first time I called them with a problem they did everything in their power to weazle out of a service call. I finally gave up on them and got a local guy to come out and cut some locks off my toad....lost keys but Coach Net said that wasn't covered. I ask them if I was locked out of the vehicle wouldn't they comeout, they said they would be the labor of actually getting into the rig would be on my dime. I think Coach Net is a rip off.

Just my opinion based on the calls I have made to them.

I think that no ERS (emergency road service) pays for the actual cost of repair. For example, if your motorhome's engine blew ... they'd surely respond to the scene and tow you to a repair facility. But it's up to you to pay for repair parts and repair labor. And it's the repair labor that *I* paid $55 for. Without hesitation.

Ours occurred under nearly "ideal" circumstances. Sorry your circumstance wasn't similar. Maybe the next time .

Thanks for that info. I'll look into that as a proactive measure. Our CC has the two-in-the-front and one-in-the-rear arrangement, BTW. Does anyone know if they normally have a tech available on the weekend, though?

Ours was the same, but on an intermittent basis. Sure glad I didn't install oversize tires when I replaced the originals last year .

The ride height didn't need to be checked and adjusted. The horizontal arm simply came out of the hole in the adjuster's grommet. The hose clamp that secures the adjuster to the top of the vertical rod was still tight and in place.

BTW ... a check of our manuals didn't say to check the valves as a PM measure. But I will look at the three valves (two front and one rear on our coach) the next time the coach is on a lift to see if the application of safety wire can prevent a recurrence of this event which, according to the Coach. Net tech, isn't that unusual.

You're right if that's how it came apart your ride height will be the same as prior to the failure. I do check my ride height once a year as pm. The 40 footers had a recall to put two of the valves in the rear & one in the front. You may want to see if this recall affects your coach.

After we bought the coach last June, I called CC and asked if there were ever any recalls on our coach. The answer ..."No!" Apparently, 'cause our coach has no slideouts ... whereas the slideout versions of our coach have had at several recalls because of slideout weight issues.
