U.S. Highway 50

Was just reading an article about the National Yard Sale on Highway 50 and thought about making a drive across the country on that highway. But, one question: The article mentions a mountain pass at 11,300 feet in Colorado. Has anyone driven that portion of Hwy 50? Could a cowardly driver of a 40-footer survive that drive? Or should I park the rig and drive it in the car?

This is great! We are heading to CA in Sept. and plan to take Rt 70 until St Louis and then pick up Rt 50 at least to Utah.

IF that is Monarch pass, it is doable. We crossed from West to east. Just make sure you have a full tank as the climb starts several miles from any fuel stop. Just take a lot of Deep breaths. I didn't think it was as bad as crossing into Nevada from CA over the Donner Pass.

Jan and I drove that pass last year in the 40' Wanderlodge we then owned pulling a 5,500 pound Range Rover toad. You will be much happier going up with a modern diesel rather than the 2 stroke 8V92 in the Blue Bird. I suggest you go up and down slowly. Actually, you'll have little choice but to go slowly. A beautiful drive for the passenger but you will pay attention to the road rather than to the scenery.

Well! Since my first long trip began in Sacramento and I went over Hwy 50and down from Donner Pass (holding my breath!), I guess this pass wouldn't be a problem. What I may do is camp on one side and explore in the toad and then decide if I want to drive the coach over it. The maximum elevation on I-80 is about 9,000 feet so the extra 2300 shouldn't be too bad. >

Thanks, George and Jan. I expect that I'll camp on the West side of this pass and take it with the toad. If I chicken out, I'll have driven the road and taken some pictures and then will have a plan for tracking around it...maybe I-70. Colorado is one of the states I've not visited yet so am looking forward to this trip.
