Tire Life; was Coach Weight

Our "stay-at-home-in-the-driveway-to-make-people-think-we're-not-away" car is a 150K mile '89 Acura Integra, which I love to drive. Coincidentally, its tires are at least six years old, with no weather checking and little tread wear 'cause of the limited mileage the car has been driven in the past five years. However (and this is important), we've noticed that, despite proper inflation, the tires now squeal when cornering a little aggressively, despite not having done so in the past.
Since the Acura is only used locally, I haven't been concerned. However, a recent magazine article emphasized that, as tires get older, they're prone to traumatic failure (we all know that) *AND* the rubber gets harder and harder, decreasing traction!! And I'm convinced that's the cause of our tire squealing. Since harder tires reduce the car's cornering limits and increase stopping distance, a new set of new tires is in order. Cheap "insurance" in my book.

Dick,

If the tires squeal, when is the last time you had a wheel alignment?
It's been awhile (car's not driven much), but I suspect that the squeal isn't an alignment problem. It tracks perfect with hands off the wheel ... no obvious unbalanced tires ... and tire wear is perfectly straight across (I own a tread depth gauge) ... and tire pressure is OK for the load. Just for the heck of it, I'll have the alignment checked. Regardless, the tires still are "old" and warrant replacement 'cause of that. Thanks for the suggestion.
