Patio rugs

As a new coach owner I have a question regarding patio rugs. I noticed that there are two types, the outdoor carpet type and the awning-like material type. I haven't purchased one yet and was wondering if proponents of each type could tell me what they like about it. Does the rug type need to be staked down? Is one type easier to clean than the other? ETC? Thanks for any info you can provide.

There is one more type--a plastic weave. I have owned all three types. Rugs are heavy, hardest to clean and retain water. The canvas mat & plastic weave do not retain the water, are easier to clean, and store in a much smaller spot. I currently use the plastic weave which just happens to be the cheapest--around $50. My experience has been that all rugs need to be held down as soon as the wind blows.

We've happily been using 9'x12' versions of the plastic weave type for ~5 years. We do have to replace 'em every year 'cause sunlight dries 'em out, causing them to start flaking themselves to death . But their advantages make it worthwhile.

There is another type, an encapsulated jute mat from ZipDee, it is an open weave & will not kill the grass or absorb water. I have used it for years & can highly recommend it.

We stayed at a CG where a rule was, "No Astro Turf mats." Since ours is an open weave plastic mat, not Astro Turf (a brand name product with a solid base), we put it down and went out to sight see. When we returned, our mat was on our picnic table, neatly folded. After the girl in the office told me that her parents picked it up, I told her that the mat wasn't an Astro Turf mat, but was a plastic open weave mat. She replied, "My parents are old fashioned, and, to them, all mats are 'Astro Turf.' In fact, if you'll notice, we don't even use a computer at the registration desk." So we didn't use our mat .

BTW ... we, too, used to feel that our open weave mat wouldn't kill grass.
But, after a stay in a Maine CG for a month, we picked it up at the end of our stay, and the grass underneath was dead. Or at least dormant. Which isn't the same ... but there was a 9'x12' brown spot.

With our Past three MotorHomes we've used Indoor/OutDoor Carpeting with the Rubber Backing. But now that we have ungraded to a CC MotorCoach, we may have to upgrade our thinking, depending on the responses your inquiry generates from the more experienced MotorCoach Folks . . .
