Hondas as a toad

Tom,

I wonder why we never hear any comments about the Hondas that are catching fire and fact that Honda will not do a recall. They are going to issue a service bullitin saying be carefull when draining oil etc. Is it because we are to busy bring down American products that we forget the Japaneses are also human.

It's been in many newspapers and all over the 'net. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) did a six-month investigation that was closed on July 1st and determined that the problem was caused by vehicle technicians.

The agency said that when the oil filter is removed, part of the seal may adhere to the engine block. And if the seal isn't removed before the new filter is put in, there's a risk of oil leakage. When the oil leaks onto the hot exhaust manifold, it can result in a fire. And apparently has ...
20+ times.

This only applies to the 2003 and 2004 CR-V, by the way.

True I have been up in Nova Scotia since late June but where have you heard of Honda's catching fire? Sounds like a press release from GM or Detroit! Any proof to such claims? Mike 2000 Allure 98 CRV.

Bill,

Which model Honda's have the fire problem? I've towed my 2000 Honda Accord about 45,000 miles without incident.

According to an AP story, the problem affects '03 and '04 CR-V's. They wrote ...

"After a six-month investigation that was closed on July 1, NHTSA determined the problem was caused by vehicle technicians. The agency said that when the oil filter is removed, part of the seal may adhere to the engine block. If the seal isn't removed before the new filter is put in, there is a risk of oil leakage."

The leaking oil makes it way to the exhaust manifold, where it can ignite.
Another article mentioned that this can also be caused by failing to lubricate the filter's seal before tightening it. This causes the seal to deform, oil to leak and possible ignition and fire.

This has been all over the news. Someone else has explained it on this site.
I just wondered why all the Honda owners were not raising hell.
