E470 - Denver ByPass

For those still headed west to the Class Reunion and contemplating coming west on I70 and then north on I25 in Denver CO: do your wallet a favor and DO NOT take the E470 Tollway on the east side of town.
A tag axle coach with toad costs $21 for the 22 mile length of the bypass.
Three toll barriers at seven dollars a pop.
We have travelled east/west before but generally stay down on I40 or go up and grab either I80 or I90.

The toll takers sounded like I was not the only one to complain - they gave me a number to call but the person at that end basiclaly, but politely, ignored my complaint.

I think the "E" in E470 stands for excessive.

Would you object if I forwarded your message to CDOT (CO Dept of Transportation)? I also learned the hard way a year ago and complained, to no effect. Maybe a number of complaints would get their attention.

I'm sitting here at home plotting a trip and my mtn pass book is in the coach which is quite some miles away. I'd appreciate some advice.
We will be traveling from Breckenridge CO to Durango CO. I know not to take 70 East and then 550 South (there are sections of that road near Ouray that are scary in a car). I can head east on I70 to Denver, then south on I25 and then west on 160, but that seems a long way around.
Has anyone driven any of these roads:

9 south from Breckenridge to Fairplay and then 285 to 160 or 91 south from I 70 to 24 then 285 to 160 or 24 south from I 70 to 285 to 160
These all look like 2 lane roads over high mtn passes, but I can't tell if they are narrow and full of hair pin turns or whether they are "doable".

I like to come down thru South Park via Buena Vista and the University Mountains to Salida and then across from Alamosa to Durango. A few moderate grades up and down, the two lane roads are nice and the scenery is unbelievable. Make sure you get an early start for best light on the mountains. South Park is a region ' high plateau, not a town on the map.

Thanks for the helpful reply. I see Buena Vista on the map. Which would be the best road from I 70 south to Buena Vista? We'll be at Breckenridge but can backtrack to 91 south or 24 south if 9 south out of Breckenridge isn't a good idea.

Go south to Fairplay and then on to Buena Vista. I traveled it a few years ago with my crew cab and 34' travel trailer. Have your engine brake or exhaust brake ready to go and take your time. You can't hurry in this part of the world. Driving I-70 was more of a challenge than what you will face if you take your time and smell the roses on the way. TWI 11731 2004 42' Intrigue
