Automatic ceiling fan problem--anyone have a fix?

Our '98 Allure has two fantastic fan units that apparently have some kind of rain sensor to automatically close them with rain. The problem is, they also try to close the units at night (cooler, damper?) when there is no rain, and the units just start cycling open/close until the noise wakes you up and you turn the fans off.

Anyone else had this problem? It started with one fan but now both are affected. Thanks.

Mine started this too. The folks at FF told me to pull off the MaxAir covers and wipe off the rain sensor (a 1x5 inch printed circuit board). They said dirt collects on the board because the cover restricts the air flow. I just cleaned mine - only takes a few minutes to take the covers off. They didn't look too dirty, but I did find the wires I need to cut if they ever act up again! With the covers I leave mine open all the time unless it's cold anyway so I really don't need the rain sensor.

We have a 98 Intrigue and we have the same problem with both of our fantastic fans. It would be nice if they stayed open at night but after a few hours they start to cycle open and shut until you turn them off. We don't have Maxair covers on either fan. If anyone knows why or how to fix, please let us know.

Thanks--I don't have MaxAir covers. I take it the rain sensors are under the electric cover. I'll give this a try.

I spoke with tech rep on other questions. He said to use the "set" button when the fan is open but turned off and hence closing. That will defeat the rain sensor mechanism. Also if the temp knob is set 80 - 90 degrees, the rain sensor is defeated. However that will be a high fan speed.

The dew and rain sensor is what causes the lid and fan to cycle closed.

These folk are extraordinarily helpful even on older products.

Same experience here. I put hoods over the fans. I got the inexpensive hoods at Campingworld and have never had any leakage and havn't had the rain sensor try to actuate the motor in 2 years. I just leave the original cap open except when it's cold. You can still use the switch to open and close the original cap and fan thermostat/speed control works the same.

Yep...and that is why I put a cover over the fan no matter what the Fantastic Fan folks claim. Actually both my fans are covered and I would strongly recommend that. One can leave the covers open even without running the fan which is quite helpful when parked or stored. I think there is a way to overcome the sensitivity of the rain sensor by using the manual setting if you have that. Regardless, I would still recommend the covers as suggested above. 2000 Allure 30493 with a 98 CRV.

Dan, I had the same problem with one of the fans on a 2000 Intrigue I owned. I called the mfg and was advised it was a defective rain sensor. They mailed me a new one at no charge and I replaced it myself---no sweat. The FF people are first class and are at the FMCA rallies for service.

I cleaned the sensor with fine steel wool as instructed by FF. I found that to help tremendously. At night I only open the vent covers about 3" by using the stop button and have found that this has stopped the problem of dew closing them at night.

Worked for me.
