trade in price vs retail price

Can any of you that have purchased new coaches provide any info regarding the diff between the fair retail value of your used coach and what dealers were willing to give on a trade in? Is it worth the hassle of trying to sell the used coach yourself? If you make a deal including a trade in, and the build of the new coach is out a few months, do you use the old coach until the new is delivered, and do they honor the trade in price originally negotiated?

I thank it is time to bite on the new Affinity, and we will trade or sell our 03 Allure.

Since we are in Mich, seems if I sell it myself, I might take it to Florida or Texas to a consignment dealer at this time of year.

bill call your insurance co you might find out that you have no coverage after you put the coach on a lot. I have called every insurance co who had a ad in FMCA, motorhome mag, and good Sam plus I talked to every insurance booth at fmca rally in Redmond all of them stated no coverage once the coach is for sale BY CONSIGNING.

Don't know what you are planning but I can tell you how we purchased our 05 Magna.
When we were at the Tucson Rally last Feb. we fell in love with the 05 Mag and made a deal with Lazy days to order a coach and trade ours when the new coach was finished in late June. Then CC came back to us and said they could not deliver till late July. That did not work for us because we planned on going to Redmond from florida in July. So CCI said we could take factory delivery at no cost to us and trade our coach at Lazy Days. So we signed the deal in Feb. 2004, took our 01 Mag in for trade to LDs July 10th, LDs did not have permission to sell the 01 until we took delivery in JC on july 26. So we drove to a rally in St louis by car then on to JC. Took delivery on 26, signed all papers from LDs on 27th. 5 months pasted from the time we sealed the deal until we took delivery. The only thing we had to agree to do for LDs on the old coach was not to drive it over 50k before trade in date.
During the time before the delivery we tried to sell our 01 Mag but not to hard. The few people who asked about our coach wanted to buy it for about what the dealer gave us for the coach. We had a number from LDs and if we got more they would handle the financing and give us the difference but we had to get a lot more to handle the sales tax problem in florida. So if you plan to sell yourself check the sales tax rule before you do. If we sold ourself in florida we would owe $13k more in sales tax.
I guess I rambled on for a while, any questions let me know.

Bill,

Check your insurance policy before you consider consignment. Most RV insurance policies do not cover the coach if it is placed on consignment. Mine states it clearly.

thanks for the info.

that answers part of the question: they honor the trade in price for a period of time.

I am hoping some folks will enlighten me as to what the spread is between what you can sell it yourself for, and the trade in value.
Is the spread 10%? 15%? 20%????

As to the tax issue, in Michigan, you get no offset for the trade in, you owe 6% sales tax on the new vehicle price, period.
If you buy a $500K coach, you owe Mich an additional $30,000 in sales tax.

We are in Elkhart, IN, having a new passenger-side windshield installed, and the original co-pilot seat re-installed, prior to selling the coach.

I had installed a smaller co-pilot seat, because at 4'9", the orig wasn't comfortable for Lenore.
