Records on coach prior to delivery

I have just found out that Cummins was called to do some sort of work on my coach prior to delivery to dealer...found this out when Cummins had shown an incorrect start of warranty date which was three months prior to coach purchase. The Cummins rep told me that probably happened when CC factory personnel called Cummins on an engine issue during mfg. The Cummins rep told me that the call would have resulted in an incorrect start of warranty period. I am now trying to find out what the engine issue was...this is of interest to me because of the black smoke problem I have had with this coach since I purchased it new. Having been to 7 different Cummins distributor with none of them able to fix it. I am now considering the possibility that the factory tried to get this fixed prior to delivery to the dealer. I would like to know if anyone knows of a way to get the records from CC on any engine issues they had during assembly of the coach. This might help in my quest to get Cummins to finally resolve the black smoke issue. Cummins has always pointed to the CAC or some other air issue but has never actually been willing to admit there may be an internal engine issue.
Would greatly help in pointing me to someone at CC who might be able to get the needed info.

When I was at the factory in October of 2003 getting some work done on my coach, I asked Jim Cooley if I could get a copy of what was submitted to them by a dealer when I had some in-warranty repairs done about 45 days after I purchased my coach (It was the only service/repair item that I did not have paperwork for). A day or so later he showed up with not only that item, but a multi-page printout of everything that had been done to the coach prior to the time I took delivery, which included a transmission repair. Since Jim gave me more than I expected, I would assume that these records are readily available for the asking.

Ray, I can pass on some of my thoughts regarding black smoke coming from your engine. I maintained a number of Mercedes 300 diesel engines over 22 years. Had my own injection equipment. One or more bad injectors will cause the problem, and if severe, no amount of injector cleaner will fix the problem. You probably have Bosch injectors. In order to determine which one or more injectors are causing the problem, you have to determine it during the first minute or so when starting cold. It will make a knocking sound for a while. If you have a stethoscope with an iron probe on it, this will help. The other method is to break the nut slightly on the top of each injector, diesel will squirt out, and then when the noise quits, that is the injector causing the problem. Depending on mileage, you may want to change them all out to solve the problem. When putting in new ones, you must run cleaner through them and check the spray pattern to make sure you are atomizing properly. If poor, return it to the supplier. I have found a number of them that were defective.
Most of the Bosch injectors in this country are made in Brazil.
Cleaning old injectors seldom works, the tolerances are in the ten thousands range. I use to shim mine to around 1675 psi and then at about 100,000 miles they will be down in the 1500 range. Bosch makes a pump for the injectors; I sold mine to MB Motors in Phoenix. They only work on Mercedes. Most areas of the country have shops that do nothing but injector and pump work. They usually will not take them out of your engine. I don't know if this information will help you or a mechanic. I use to buy smoking cars with 100,000 to 175,000 mile on them, fix the injectors and then drive them until they the car was worn out, usually in the 300,000 to 400,000 mile range. The engines were still going, but transmissions, front ends etc. became too costly to repair. John

I was just at Cummins for service and they were able to search the Cummins database by engine serial number for any repairs they did.
