Well, I guess you gotta be smarter than the tire ...

... sorry to be a smart ass, you do have to be careful I agree, but if you use a regulated line set to the desired pressure you will be fine. Regulated meaning a Bellofram double state precision reg (we use them at work).

I'd say that anyone using a "Bellofram double sta(g)e precision regulator" is being "extremely careful," as I recommended.
I think that you might be the only person in the world using a Bellofram to inflate bicycle tires, though!

How much are they, by the way???

Don't know ... never bought one. We use them at work on our tension control systems, have for years. Since it's my company, I just ask the boss if I can have one. My wife says ... sure.
I have used them for years to inflate all my low pressure stuff like tractor tires and ATV tires. Just set the pressure via the gauge, and inflate away. Bike tires to 0.1 psi ... that's important (heh, heh).

Another gizmo I made up from parts from work involves a small Mac three way manual valve and a pressure gage.
I put quick connects on the input and output and whatever scale gauge I want in the gauge port. I can connect to my little compressor and hook up whatever inflate tool. I then can press the button putting air in, and release the button and read the pressure.

Same as the commercial units, but I can put any gauge I want in the gauge port depending upon the pressure range I want.

Valve is only about $15. Told you I had a tire fetish.
