Sharp Aquos LCD TV

I've been reading about many of you who have removed the old head- banger TVs and installed the new Sharp 30" or 32" LCD TVs. That sounded like a great plan for me to upgrade my coach. I've always wanted better picture quality for TV viewing and for viewing my photos, so I started the upgrade process.

First step was to upgrade my digital photography capability. Spent over $1000 to buy a new Canon 8 megapixel digital camera. Awesome camera that takes great pictures. Then I took a CD with my sample jpeg files down to the local Best Buy to have them displayed on a new Sharp LCD TV. YUK! What a disappointment! The $4000 Sharp LCD HDTV TV has only 1366x768 pixels (about 1 meg). The photos are very grainy. I expected "knock my socks off" HDTV quality and the results were not even close to my expectations. I can't believe the pictures were so poor. I also watched a regular TV broadcast (not HDTV) and I was very disappointed at the broadcast TV quality. It seems that the larger set just amplifies the graininess of the picture for regular TV broadcasts.

So, I may have wasted a grand on the 8 megapixel camera. That doesn't make me happy. But before I spend any more big bucks on a Sharp LCD TV, I wanted to see if any of you have found a good way to show high quality photos on your new large screen LCD TVs.

Any comments, suggestions or ideas are greatly appreciated.

One more question... I'm real concerned about the intense heat generated in the electronics cabinet over the drivers seat, especially on sunny days. On sunny days, the temp in there can easily go over 120 degrees and I know that is not good for all those expensive electronic boxes I have up front. Has anyone found a good solution to cooling the front cabinet? I've experimented with several Radio Shack computer fans, but the fan noise level bugs me.
Any suggestions on solving this problem are also greatly appreciated.

Have you considered a LCD projector instead of a TV. I think the XVGA would make you happy. Projector cost are well under the price of a LCD screen. HDTV may still be problem. A Digital satellite reciever with a S-Video will give you 400 lines of resolution.
Thats a long way from the 1100 promised but Satellite recievers are compressing the signal anyway. It will be a few more years before display technology can match the recorded format.

Cooling the overhead could be helped by spacing of components further apart and replacing solid cabinet doors or keeping them part way open.

We just purchased a Bose 3,2,1 GS and plan to install it soon.

Get the 30" or 32" LCD for the reason of creating space and eliminating the headbanging. I too was disappointed with the quality the first time I turned it on. There is a misconception out there that the newer LCD's provide sharper pictures than old tube types.
It just ain't true. You must have an HD program or station to see the benefit. Those pictures are better, but are only a small percentage of the broadcasts available. Give it time and things will get better.

As far as the camera images, you are trying to push too much data (image) to the screen. HDTV portrays an picture at 720 horizontal lines of resolution. Your TV supports 768 which is fine, but the image from your camera is probably somewhere around 3 times the resolution. To display the full image, the TV must discard alot of those pixels and there lies the problem. Try to take one of your high quality 8 meg photos and crop it (not resize) to the exact 768 pixels of horizontal resolution. Then run it through the TV and I think (hope) you will see the difference. The advantage of the new high resolution cameras are mainly for larger and higher quality printing that will result. As a matter of fact, the expensive 19" computer monitor I'm working on only supports 1600x1200 (less than 2 meg), so you can see that displays are way behind cameras as far as resolution. The 8 meg cameras are great for printing very large and beautiful photographs that rival film based cameras.
Is the LCD upgrade worth $4,000? Yes, and I would do it again with no hesitation. Once HDTV and higher quality DVD's become mainstream, you'll be glad you did. Not to mention, no more bumps on your head!

Let me know where you are going to install the sub-woofer. I was just looking at the Bose systems recently and was concerned about the installation, mainly the sub-woofer and the cables that run to it.

Doing research by reading TV comparison reviews in *Consumer Reports* magazine can pay big dividends.

How did you connect to the monitor? If you used the NTSC input, the pics will indeed look bad. If the Sharp monitor has a 15pin RGB computer input, load the jpegs on a notebook and connect the Sharp monitor to the external output of the notebook. I bet you get a much better result.

Rob,

The sub woofer will go in the empty space behind blank panel on the passenger side of the 01' Intrigue. A port hole will be cut to match the Bose and covered with grill cloth to match interior. The 321 is a good fit. Cables going up to the control unit can be mounted on the passenger side by removing the right windsheald moulding. I will have to go from bottom to top and open up the existing access whole going into the overhead cabinet. The old speaker wires will be used to pull the new ones. We are enjoying the system now in the den. I also love the combo MP3, DVD, CD player. A real space saver with a great sound.

Hope that helps, I plan on have the unit installed by spring.
