Cooling of front overhead cabinet

I've done a couple of things to keep the overhead cabinet from overheating the direct TV controller box. First, I took the panel out which is in front of the box (actually two panels, one in front of the other) and drilled evenly space holes through them all over the front to allow for better ventilation. If they are in evenly spaced, off set rows and columns, it looks as if it was done at the factory. Second I mounted a thermostatically controlled 12 volt refrigerator vent fan in the cabinet which blows accross the TV box toward the vent holes. The fan comes on at about 110 degrees and goes off at 90 degrees. I found some 12 volt wiring right in the cabinet, so running wires was no problem. I also enlarged the opening the TV box sits in to allow better ventilation. Finally, I cut an opening in the cabinet door in front of the TV box. If routed, sanded and finished to match the cabinet (ours is natural cherry wood), it can be made to look very presentable. This allows ventilation and the use of the remote control without having to have the cabinet door open all the time (which creates a head banger hazard). The problem with the use of the remote is it is IR (infra- red) vs RF (radio frequency) which will work through the wooden door.

Another solution to help transmitting "through the wooden door" is to go to good ol' Radio Shack and buy a Wireless Infrared Remote Control Extender.
It's a pair of electronic pyramids ... one left outside the cabinet and one inside. It works well.
