Possible $20,000 mistake at Flying J

Here's a scary story that could happen to anyone of us.

The driver of a large diesel pusher stops at the Flying J in Harrisburg, PA and proceeds to fill his tank at the RV aisles. Six pumps are there, three per aisle for regular unleaded, hi-test unleaded and diesel fuel respectively. The driver apparently did not pay attention and took the wrong filler pistol off the hook and put hi-test gasoline into his diesel tank.
Then he drove the circle to the dump station to empty his wastewater tanks. While he was dumping, blueish smoke started to blow out of the generator and engine exhaust pipes. He made it to the parking lot but there his generator and diesel engine stalled.
Yikes ! Obviously, you want to get the gasoline out of the tank and clean the fuel lines, fill the tank with diesel fuel, prime the engine and hope for the best. Anyone with insight into how an engine like that can be saved, please post.
I go at that fuel station in Harrisburg from time to time but usually go to the truck aisles because they have the larger bore filler pistols that drastically reduce the time it takes to fill a 100 gal. or greater tank. I looked at the pumps in the RV aisles and must say that it is easy to make the mistake that unfortunate driver made.

What do you experienced mechanics say ? Jeff

I use Flying J for fuel also. I always go to the truck aisles for the same reasons stated above. I also go there for another reason.
Some of the RV aisles at Flying J's are very narrow. I went to one and it was so narrow that I could not drive my coach through it to fuel up. There was a huge concrete pillar ahead of the aisles to keep rigs from side swiping the pumps. I had to unhook the toad and back up to get out of there. I talked to the Flying J home office and they told me to use any pump I wanted to use. The truck aisles are wide and the only have diesel. Makes life much easier!!!! Dave

Unfortunately that has happened too many times at the RV pumps. During our travels we have seen that exact problem happen twice at a Flying J RV station. Like you we always go to the truck area to fill. I too would be happy to hear from an experienced mechanic on the repair that will be needed.

To find where the flying J's are go to there web site @ flyingj.com. They also give the diesel cost at all their stations.
