Questions about condensation and HWH

Yahoo Message Number: 13399
I have questions about a couple things.
We have been staying in our coach for extended periods (1 to 3 weeks) in the cold weather and we are getting a lot of condensation on the windows, inside the cabinets and dripping down the walls. How do you deal with the water? We are having trouble with the HWH leveling the rear of the coach. It seems to let the air out when we are trying to raise it and if it does raise it is verrrry slow. Any ideas? Thanks

Tammy:

We too, have experienced the condensation you described. We are fulltimers presently in Oregon.
A few days ago I purchased a dehumidifier from Home Depot. What a difference!
These machines are fairly good size, about 2 feet high, 18 inches wide and 12 inches deep. We put in the bedroom during the day and in the livingroom/galley at night.
Like all things it takes a little getting used to, a bit on the noisy side and moving it around so it isn't in the way. It is worth it, no more condensation.

Chuck,

Thanks for the suggestion. We borrowed one from my brother in law since they are now using the HUMIDIFIER in their house. In the first 2 1/2 hours it collected almost 2 cups of water.

Tammy,

Keep the coach well vented and that will keep the moisture down. In cold weather we always keep a bathroom ceiling vent open and when cooking use the ceiling fan and vent.

Your dehumidifier sounds very large...I cannot give a name but while in OR last winter I saw very nice dehumidifiers in boating shops in OR. I would suggest that if near boating stores check for dehumidifiers there. Mike.

We collect about 1 gallon every 12 hours. Hate to think where all that water would be if not in the collection container.

Camping World sells a very effective mini-dehumidifier that is great for RVs and boats. The unit is only 12" x 12" x 15" so it easily fits on a counter top. Just stick the drain line in the sink. No need to have a big house type unit when you're only dehumidifying such a small space. It sells for about $360 - not cheap, but I like it better than the big full-house type units because it is quiet and saves space.

I am wondering how much power this unit consumes while it is running at different settings (assuming it has different speeds)?

This is the link to campingworld.com http://www.campingworld.com/browse/skus/index.cfm? skunum=4655&src=SRQZ for the dehumidifier. Make sure that you get all of the link as you know what yahoo does to links!

$360 sounds like an awful lot for this instrument. Is that with the PC "discount" too? Again my apologies for not recalling a specific name but I saw dehumidifiers at marine stores in Newport, OR and recall prices around $70. If made for boats/yachts it should be perfect for our RV's.
Anyone in Newport, OR now? Follow the harbor/bay around and there is a large marine store there. Hope this helps. Mike 2000 Allure #30493.

Update---

It was actually almost 3 cups of water in 2 1/2 hours the yesterday. Today we learned something......Don't put the dogs water near the dehumidifier, well duh! Rick said he couldn't believe how much they were drinking until he realized that it wasn't the dogs drinking it, it was the dehumidifier......oh well lessons learned.
Thanks for the help.

Check out the Bionaire Dehumidifier BDQ-24 at Walmart.com. Only $159 and has hose for continous drain.

We have had the same problem in the past and I did two things which has taken care of it. First, I purchased and installed some of the ceiling material that is used in many RV's from LD at a very reasonable cost. I lined the outside wall of both my wardrobes and the large cabinet over the bed with the material. Easy to apply, just cut to size, put it in place and check your fit. If it is OK, fold back 1/2 of the material. Spray wall with adhesive (3M) and put the material back in place. Fold back the other 1/2, spray, and put material back in place. This looks good, matches your ceiling and in my case, the material that CC used in the back of the closet over our bed. It also adds more insulation to the wall.
The second thing I did was buy a "Soleus Portable Dehumidifier" (p/n CFM25) from http://www.compactappliance.com/ at a cost of $159.54 plus $35.00 shipping. It will remove 25 pints of water/day, runs on 115v and uses 200 watts. Measures 21 7/16h x 15w x 10 5/16d. Weights 27 pounds. Has an auto shutoff when full or you can connect a hose and drain into your sink. Has a one year warranty. Has worked great. On a cold night, I get about 6-7 pints of water. Plus, I don't have to leave a vent open to let all of my nice warm air out.
