Insurance ...

Yahoo Message Number: 15192
I did a search and found nothing, so I will start anew.

We got a State Farm policy to cover our new Affinity until we found something better.

So ... what is better ????

We got a brochure from Lazy Days for Progressive and National Interstate. Both make some astounding claims concerning coach replacment.

What is the hot set up? I don't want a free lunch, but the best policy for the money.

I figured at least some of you folks have been thru this.

Thanks ...

John and Terry, the Progressive policy is for real. I had State Farm coverage on past coaches which, like an auto policy, provides for actual loss sustained in case of total loss. In other words some blue book value dreamed up by the insurors. An article appeared in " Destinations " magazine a few years ago about an Affinity owner who was run off the road and turned over in Mexico. He was able to drive it to the factory in Oregon and was told it was a total loss, as deisel had permeated the walls when the coach turned over. He had replacement coverage with Progressive and had a new coach ( I believe two model years newer ) within about two weeks. I don't recall his name, but he may still be a CC owner.
When I read the story I immediately contacted the Miller Agency in Lake Oswego, Ore for a quote. Believe it or not I saved money with Progressive vs. State Farm, primarily by taking higher deductibles on a disappearing plan. Each year without a claim the deductibles went down one/forth so I am now at zero deductible. The replacement provision lasts for five model years, and after that a total loss will be paid for at the original cost of the coach.
It gets better----I traded coaches when I was down to 50% of the original deductibles and assumed I would have to start over with the new coach. I was informed that was not the case as the deductible reduction is on the owner, not the coach.
As you can no doubt tell, I am enthusiastic with Progressive ( now they call themselves Drive ), although I have never filed a claim. I heartily recommend you contact the Miller Agency as they specialize in RV policies. They always have a booth at FMCA rallies, and they advertise in both" FMCA" and "Motorhome" magazines.
Sorry I ran on so long, but I feel you will want to look into this coverage.

John,

I ditto Walt's statement. I have Progressive. I have never filed a claim. So far everything looks good on paper. If and when a claim is made will be proof of how good they are.

There is a recent change that Progressive made. They used to consider full timing anything longer than five months use. They dropped that and consider that if you have a home you are not full timing. Also, I recently found out if you store the coach away from you residence, the premimum is a little higher. Not sure why the reasoning on that one. I keep my coach stored at a secured storage facility with coded gates, security cameras and a full time resident manager. Far more secure than my own yard.

I changed from Progressive a few years ago. After "assuming" I had coverage for a few years, they told me that they did not cover full-timers. This was in Texas---may be different in other states. Now I have coverage through RV Alliance.

[Country-Coach-Owners] Re: Insurance ... National Interstate also offers great RV insurance at the best rates that I have seen. They specialize in RV policies and the bonus here is if you travel in Mexico you get full collision and comp for only $5 per year. This coverage, along with a Mexican liability driver's license policy ($174 per year) saves you the $1,000+ per year Mexican policy that many of us purchase when we travel south. The only negative is that you need to buy your toad coverage elsewhere since they do not do automobiles. Beaudry RV in Tucson has a National Interstate office on site and handled our needs very efficiently.

adios

I had progressive until my garage backed into me. A $3,000.00 claim was submitted and paid. Then the premium jumped $1,000.00 per year. No thanks.

John, who are you insured with currently? It is my understanding that insurance companies in general (home or auto) raise your premium if you have claim (your fault or not). If you have found a company who does not raise the premium, please share their name with the group. We have been with Progressive for 10+ years and are happy with Miller Agency. Isn't it sad that the insurance companies raise the premium if you have a claim. Always thought insurance was there to differ the costs over a risk pool AND over time.

Kinda like having health insurance that goes up when you get older.. as we have all experienced... What about a flat premium for life that takes into account the long term risk profile of the insured..maybe adjusted for inflation...

Just venting,

I have National Interstate and had a windshield replaced as result of stone flying up and causing a huge crack in the windshield. That was in 03, in 04 they didn't raise my rates. This year rates went up around 10%, but believe that had nothing to do with that one claim I had on the windshield. I've had the same policy for a little over 5 years. National Interstate seems to be good to deal with. RV Alliance, it appears that RV Alliance is not an insurance company but is an agency and actually places many of their policies with National Interstate.

Sounds like you got off light, John. I had a $3,000 claim and they tried to increase premiums by $4,000! I finally reduced some coverage to get it down some. Increased deductible to $5,000 since it would not make sense to submit a claim for less.

Thanks for the info, John, I appreciate you getting back to us. I will call and check them out. I have had quotes from some other insurance companies and so far Progressive is the least costly premium in California. When do you get your new coach? Candace Hollick Affinity 6370
