Yosemite RV Sites

We plan to visit Yosemite later this year (late September) and were wondering about the RV facilities in the park itself. We will be entering from the West and after the visit would like to drive through and exit the eastern end.
From the information I have it looks like the North Pines is just about the only possibility. Any information regarding the facilities in the park for a forty footer with a Motosat dish would be appreciated.

Unless the pine trees have all fallen, you can expect to be out of touch while there, I think. Every camp ground I have ever stayed in at Yosemite was full of trees. As far as driving into the park from the West - Hwy 140? It might be ok...there is one place where there is a BIG rock over the road, but buses appear to get through so with a good copilot, you should be able to do it. As far as the width of the road, I think Hwy 41 from Fresno is better, wider and doesn't have any rocks hanging over it. I don't think I have ever seen a big rig on Tioga Pass....and I lived very near the park and spent many days and hours there before I sold my house. Tioga Pass is narrow and steep in places.

Let us know how it goes. If you succeed, I might take my coach up there next fall after the Class Reunion. ;-) The place definately is not planned for big rigs. You might be happier camping outside the park and driving in each day.

We have stayed at North Pines with our 38' Gulfstream and left the park across Tioga Pass. I wouldn't recommend it for a 40 footer. The roads are narrow and the curves are tight. If I remember, the park doesn't allow coaches over 38'. I called and asked before we stayed there, but it has been a while. Yosemite is our favorite place on earth. We have visited yearly from Texas for the past thirty years. These days we leave our coach outside the park and drive in. It's not as much fun, but we still enjoy the incredible beauty of the park.

My experience (I learned the hard way) with National and state parks has forced me to become even more conservative when approaching these places. I think I will go around Yosemite on Hwy 4 or 108 and stay at Lee Vining. There appears to be a decent RV park there and we can check out Mono Lake and Yosemite both.
Now, its back to getting ready for our Alaska trip in May. Hope to see you at the Class Reunion in September

I have stayed in Upper Pines in my 2002 40ft Allure. I saw many sites in Upper and Lower Pines that would accomodate larger coaches. When you are at the reservation site you can get a desription of the site such as "36 foot pad with 10 foot overhang".
You can search through until you find the sites that might work and then have that info handy when you attemot to make the reservation.
I would not tell them you are 40 feet long at the resv desk. They usually don't know the specifics on the site. I have found many state and national parks with a 35 foot linit that would accomOdate a 40 ft MH.

I don't recommend 4 or 108 either - another part of my old stomping grounds. They are two more narrow, curvey mountain roads that are not good for big rigs. Maps don't do roads like this justice...example is how AZ Hwy 89A looks on the map. Thought it would take me about an hour to get to Prescott from Cottonwood. Took almost two hours through switchbacks and 35 mph for about 40 miles.

I would take I-80 to Reno and go down 395 to Lee Vining.

I came through Hwy 41. We stayed one night at one of the campgrounds at Bass Lake.

Careful on your access into Bass lake - take the main road in. We took an alternate route and needed to make a right at the bottom of the hill, at the lake, but the road merged to the left making a right turn impossible.

More questions, Bruce, Did you have a toad? Did you have any issues with 41 (narrow, curves) inside the park? I sure would like to camp in Yosemite again, but am so concerned about trying to take out a mountain again. $6000 damage that time. 8-( Can you make reservations before going to the park? or do you have to go to the reservations office at Camp Curry?

I was towing a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I made the reservations by telephone ahead of time. Like other Nat'l parks they open a certain window of future dates available for reservation every couple of months. You will want to know which sites would work for you before you call.
