Engine warning light

This light came on the other day while just moving the coach from the carport to the street so the carport could be painted. I couldn't find anything in the Cummins manual, so I called CC and Dale asked if coolant was low. I told him it was always below the sight glass in this coach ( and my previous CC's ) and he said low coolant would cause the light to go on. I added coolant all the way to the top, but the light is still on. I seem to remember I had low coolant in my 97 Intrigue and the " Check Engine" light came on, not the "Engine Warning" light.

Coincidentally, and I rarely believe in coincidences, my cranking battery has gone dead--It's three years and 38,000 miles old. It is sufficiently dead that fault codes will not flash. Query----does anyone know if a dead cranking battery can cause the engine warning light to come on? I plan to replace the battery Wednesday morning, but am somewhat concerned about driving about 5 miles to get the battery installed if there is some other cause of the warning.
I'll appreciate some advice. By the way, I have a 370 Cummins ISL in a 2003 Allure.

Hi Walt,

A difficult question. Usually the yellow 'warning light' precedes the red 'stop engine' warning and is tied to the same problem although in this digital world almost anything can occur. How about the Silverleaf? Does it show the error? If the light came on you must have had power to the chassis and the code should be there.
Interperting it however can be a whole different story

I had a similiar experience but the yellow came first and it turned out to be a faulty digital oil pressure sending unit. The analog said the oil was ok. It might well be a faulty sensor and possibly tied to a dead battery but an ISL is a very costly thing to replace.
I would contact Cummins and see what they have to say in this case.

Maybe someone else has had an experience that more closely matches your situation.

CC tech support told me that if water level is ok and oil pressure is good then the problem is probably the water level sensor connector and is not a problem to be concerned about, if the light is intermittent. Mine has been intermittant and Cummins could find nothing wrong so I tend to believe that I need to get a new connector on the water level sensor.

Thanks for the response. I don't have a Silverleaf, so that question is moot. The Cummins manual says absence of fault code readout can be due to lack of electrical power to the system. I'm able to start the engine with the assist switch utilizing the coach batteries, so there's no problem starting and driving. I think I'll just wait and see if a new battery clears up the problem.

The last time I had an engine warning light it was a bad injection pump. The towing bill was $385.00. Call Cuins and your extended service contract copany. aybe they will bring you a new battery and install it.

Hi Walt,

Take a look at my post #15765, you can determine the fault code and then the cummins chart will show the problem. Fred has a list of the codes.

Tom, I can't get any fault codes to flash, ad the manual says this can be due to low electrical power. This is what is leading me to believe the whole problem is due to a dead cranking battery. I'll find out tomorrow.

On the way to get a new cranking battery the light went out and never reappeared. Never could get any fault code readouts. I guess I'll never know whether it was the low coolant which didn't immediately cancel the warning light or the dead battery which charged enough en route to cancel out the light.

By the way, I bought an Interstate 8-D battery at Sam's Club for $ 109.95 plus tax and disposal fee. It's a better battery than the original Champion ( 1400 cold cranking amps vs. 1000 ) with a six months replacement and 60 months prorated warranty. Just a tip for future reference.

Good info. I bought 3 new 8-D's from Interstate just a little over a year ago, spent somewhere around $170.00 each plus tax and got a 3 year warranty. At the Perry Rally, Interstate replaced 2 of them under warranty (for a total of $105.00 plus tax additional).

Another advantage to buying at SAMS is that they don't charge you a bunch of cash for labor to install the battery. Just the charge for the battery and disposal fee for old battery. I saw same battery available in a SAMS in Oklahoma City for 99.00 but wasn't sure if it was a high quality battery. My original engine battery on my 2000 Intrigue is still working but not sure how much longer it will hang in there. Hope it holds on til I get around a SAMS that has the 8Ds, my local SAMS doesn't stock them.

It is possible that you have the same situation as mine, the wires to the coolant level sensor dangle and CC tech told me that he suspected that the stress on the wires where they connect to the sensor is the culprit. Mine goes off and on intmittently and I always thought it was low coolant but it does it even after I have refilled the coolant tank.
I have no engine fault codes so think it is unrelated to an engine problem. I haven't looked at the wiring diagram to see but I tend to believe it is not a serious issue.

Hi Walt

I was suprised to find that your coach doesn't have the Silverleaf option. My 2003 Allure had it and I thought that it was standard but I'm not sure. I'm away from the coach for a couple of days but if I remember it is not called Silverleaf but rather something like the EMS Trip Planner or something like that. It's the black rectangular display in the dash the tells you what gear you are in, mph/gal rpm and a whole lot of other ECCM data. One of the displays shows the engine error code history with an attempt to decode it into English. I apologize if you knew all this already but I was just curious.

Don and Mary, my coach has none of the equipment you describe despite the fact it was a show coach and is pretty well equipped,i.e.Girard awning. Bose system, smart tire etc. It is a very early 03--I bought it in March of 02.
