Into Canada and Back

Anyone have any good/bad experiences going in or out of Canada?? I have heard where your coach is turned upside down. We will be headed to a Buddy Gregg Rally in Michigan, and the shortest route for us is via Canada.

Thanks.

Fred - You will love Canada - but don't do it like we did We took two birds and a cat across - we had vet papers and felt we were safe - We crossed the border from Idaho into British Columbia (College interns in training or a summer job - they want to show their authority)
Where are you from? I answered Nevada as Kathy says Arizona - (we answer at the same time)
Do you have any guns? I answer No - Wife answers Yes -(again we answer simultaneously)

Kathy looks at me - I look at her - it's getting funny now.
Meantime we are in the truckers lane because we think the overhang is to low for us to get under. Truckers are getting backed up because now all lanes are blocked - It looked like they were trying to signal something to us -
They tell us to go back to the coach - two officers come up (a male and a female) - they send me to the front of the coach to question me - Kathy to the back - We explain the gun is a BB gun we forgot to take out of the coach - I had forgot all about it. We ask if there is any problem with the cat or the birds - they say no. They searched the coach fairly well - had us put the jacks down and put the slides out - took about 30 minutes and they let us go.
We were in Canada - British Columbia and Alberta for a couple of months - came back through the wine country of BC into Washington State - at the border we learned there had been an outbreak of "chicken flu" - couldn't take the birds across - it was the weekend - so we went back to an RV Park (nice park) to explore options - office there helped us find a vet that recommended somebody to watch our birds until we could figure how to train them to fly along behind the coach as we crossed the border.
We left the birds and went to the CC Rally in Oregon ? after it was over we got a call the quarantine might be briefly lifted if we could get them by the following Friday ? we drove back to the border ? got there Friday in the afternoon ? Parked the coach and took the jeep across ? by this time it is about 3 PM ? we learn the vet is leaving at 4 PM and we need him to get us across ? we drive like crazy up to get the birds ? they got a big tip because we don?t wait for change and fly back to the border ? we had 5 minutes to spare ? we go through customs ? told him we need to see Dr. ?? since we have birds ? he looks at the birds and waves us on through.
This year the birds stay someplace else if we make it up there - probably late July

We spent over three weeks in Canada last summer. We visited the areas of Ottawa and Montreal and had a great time. We entered Canada Ogdensburg, New York and returned to the US at Champlain, New York. At both ports of entry we encounter no problems what so ever. The coach nor the Jeep, that we were towing, were searched. Both crossings took less then five minutes.

Have a great trip.

When I tried to use the truck lane going into Canada, just as I was committed and couldn't change lanes, a lady ran out and pointed for me to use the auto lanes. I couldn't back up because I was towing. I went inside and ask if I could use the truck lane and she said NO! She said they had bigger Winneabgos than mine go through the auto lanes. ( I have never had a Winny). So, I went out, unhooked, backed up and hooked up again. Then I went through the auto lanes. I could see all the black marks on the poles where people had hit them with their mirrors but I made it. Everyone must have had a good laugh watching me because they only ask if I had any firearms on board, ask about the dogs vaccination record and then bid me a good day.
So, my advise to you is to make sure you watch your mirrors as you go through the auto lanes. You might want to tuck your mirrors in a bit.
Oh yes, take your sunglasses off when you talk to the officer, they like to see the whites of your eyes.

Take your passports with you. You may not need them but they can be handy if they decide to search you. We got a short search by US Customs last year while I paid the duty on some Canadian wine. They confiscated 3 eggs but other than that, no problem.

Good advise on the sunglasses, Don.

Also, these insidious yellow
cement-filled posts,

about 4 ft high and about (I swear) 9' apart; I think they're placed to force you into

allignment so they can photograph your license plates. At 4' high, they're just below your

rear vision, and if you're slightly off allignment going in, you may have to back up and adjust to keep from scraping. This is the problem with trying to run 65' of MH and toad through the car

lane, something the customs people haven't seemed to grasp.
