Marine phone connection??

Hello CC owners!

Does anyone know how to convert the outside marine-style phone connection to a regular phone connection? Can't imagine why CC thought we'd need this funny looking phone connection. Can I splice in a regular phone connection, or is it easier/better to just by an expensive adaptor? Thanks

There should be no reason why you could not rewire and install a standard phone connection as long as you know what you are doing. I believe the reason they came that way, is because Country Coach just bought standard marine connection, which uses the funny phone connection. We bought the marine connection, but frankly have never used it, with wireless home phones we bring the phone into the motorhome when we are parked at the house, and we use cellphones on the road. Computer hookup is another story. The connector is only about $40 if I remember right. That's less than 150 miles in diesel fuel at today's prices.

OK, thanks Per! Here's some of the answers I got on RV.net.

you can cut inot that! Red & Green are usually the primary line.
Then Yellow & Black on line 2. Just go to Home Depot and check out what the offer in the phone section and put in something nice!
There are only two wires required for a phone to work; tip and ring.
I'm fairly sure it is the red and green wires or at least how they are wired at our outside protection block at the house. You can always strip the wires away and connect them to the connector and check for dial tone. It does not really matter if they are reversed.
I have saw different combinations between red / green / yellow.

Handling the wires is low voltage dc. However, if someone tries calling that line, you can get a shock from the ringing voltage around the 95 volt range but it is very low current. Only a shock and nothing like 110vac

Larry: Mine had one and it didnt work worth a tinkers DA**! I pulled it off and went to a regular household ..flat faced..RJ11 plate style. Wiring instructions are usually on the box they come in.

Recently converted mine to a standard wall outlet, four screws to remove the marine phone connector. Once removed there are three wires. The yellow in the middle, red and green on the sides. Yellow is not needed, connect up the red and green to the red and green on a standard phone jack and you have a completed connection. No need to splice the wires as there is a connector in each end of the wires.

I always had trouble with the marine pigtail, I have DSL in the coach and the pigtail connection would corrode replaced them about every 3 months, its hard not to get water on the plug because its in the water bay.
I disconnected the phone wires purchased a standard outside phone jack and installed in next bay forward. 2002 Intrigue suitofdreams 40 I also installed the TV jack there also.
I think its bad to have phone and TV jacks in the same bay where water can get to them.
Much cheaper than buying new marine plugs every 2 or 3 months, also the marine plug is not a good connection I found after you plugged in and turned it was sometimes loose, also those plugs with the pigtails are not cheap. When you take the phone wires from the water bay you will find that their is plenty of extra phone cord (length wise) to install it in next bay forward.

Larry,

I just removed the marine -style phone connector and hooked up a stardard home style phone jack. Takes just a couple minutes to remove the screws and hookup the new adapter.

Bill & Nova & Cchaka too.

What I did was to take the phone jack out of the water bay all together. I have DSL in the coach and about every 3 months the pins in the phone pig tail would get rust on them. Its hard not to get some water on the plug because it is in the water bay and buying new pigtails cost to much. So I took the whole plug out and rewired it into the next bay forward, their was plenty of extra phone wire to reroute. I have 2002 Intrigue suite of dreams and the cover for the water filter is near the wire for the phone and TV cables I put both plugs in the next forward bay away from the water. Purchased new plugs at Home Depot.
I CC should wire their coaches that way because its not good to have phone and TV jack where water is likely to get on them. There is plenty or room in that bay so I also purchased wind up spools for the phone and TV cables.
There was an ad in back of the FMCA magazine a company from NC or SC sells them.
