Grand Tetons & Yellowstone

Don and I will be heading west in September. We want to visit the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone. Does anyone know of a good campground in the area? How about the roads and elevations, OK or bad? Also is it best to stay in one campground for both parks or stay closer to one and then move to the other.

Thanks for any advice you can share.

As I write this we are camped at Red Rock RV Resort just outside West Yellowstone. This place is absolutely gorgeous. We plan to be here 8 nights - wish it were more.

We parked in a field close to stream, 100 yards from highway, in state park north of Yellowstone. After dark the traffic stopped; we had only stream & animals to hear outside MH. Next morning we drive about 3 miles south to enter Yellowstone.

About 2 miles past east gate of Yellowstone, in another state park, we camped near road & bear warning signs. Ranger said bears were threat to cars & tent campers only. Again we had quiet except for animal noises.
In morning we woke to sounds of horses & trucks arriving. We had coffee with hunters preparing to ride horses into parks for a week of hunting.

RV Park in Yellowstone two dump stations. Sites have electricity & fresh water only. Very small sites. Gravel.
Roads were fine except to east gate. Overhead hazards were only in RV parking area of state park. We could not park without much damage.
Road to east gate is probably still in construction. It was open two hours twice daily last September. !8' of road width, all gravel, no guard rail, rock wall on north, drop off on south. Slopes required engine brake plus service brakes in second & third gears. We drove close to edge as could see & feel, left climbing west bound trucks & RVs to deal with missing us & wall.

Yellowstone gates were near 7700 feet. Caterpillar made near full power above 10000 feet.

The closest RV parks we used were in OR & TX.
