CAT C9 Dipstick Calibration

Jay, had our oil changed yesterday at 3,000 miles as the dipstick in our 06 Inspire was out of sync. I needed to add 10 quarts just to get the oil level up to the add mark that was ground off the stick. Someone had painted dots on the stick to indicate the right level I guess.
Anyway after the oil was changed the new level is lower than the one that was ground off. The add and full marks are now on the back of the stick.

They put in 34 qt toatl. Would be interesting to see how much oil they add to yours?

Is the service letter from CAT or CC?
Yesterday there was a post about the rear bay on the passenger side.
It's a 18 mile drive from the CAT service in Missoula to our house.
This bay was empty except for the latter extension. I could not hold my fingers on the back of this bay. It was really HOT. Called CC and they said this was the first that they had heard of it. They will discuss the issue with the engineers (sp) and get back to me. Would be nice to be able to use this bay, BUT what can one store in it. Would like to not have to worry about any potential problems!

Ed, I have just returned (empty-handed) from the local CAT dealer. Here's the story.
Earlier version ONE: We're going to cut off some of the dipstick tube (to allow the dipstick to protrude further into the sump).
Earlier version TWO: We're going to grind off the marks on the dipstick and remark it.
Final version THREE: Whoa! Here's a service letter that pertains only to C9 engines installed in Country Coach motor homes. Replace the dipstick tube assembly. The part is on order. In the meantime, CAT tells me that a dipstick reading of "add" means "full".
Interestingly, my engine serial number did not trigger a CAT computer link to that service letter as it did to a repositioning of the heater hose to provide more heat to the cockpit (really critical in Florida in July). Only by my asking and some detective work by the local shop did the oil quantity measurement problem reveal itself.
COUNTRY COACH - - please take note! I'm guessing there are quite a few C9-equipped Country Coaches out there that, apparently, are not maintaining the proper oil levels. Luckily, the error results in over-filling rather than the opposite. I asked if that would damage the engine, and was told that the engine will just get rid of it. Bueno. Unfortunately, it really makes a mess.
Ed, the post about the rear passenger bay was my mess too. I'm sure it has to do with the muffler location on the C9. Insulation might help, but it will have to be on the inside of the bay. For now, I'm just using that bay for indestructible stuff, which is a shame since it is so accessible. Guess I'll have to swap my plastic tool box for a metal one, and lose the multimeter. I'm glad I wasn't using that bay to carry my gas can (for the outboard motor) or the propane cylinders for the BBQ.

That would have made a funny noise.

In my '04 Inspire, there is a notice in the rear bay on the passenger side clearly stating that one must NOT store items in it because of the heat from the engine. How could the CC not know about it for your '06 Inspire? I would expect that the message from the engineers will be - that bay is not for storage. I was told that by service staff during my first visit to Camp Country Coach. About the only thing you could store in it might be bricks you will use to keep your sewer hose in the sewer hole, I guess. They won't start on fire, will they? ;-)

Carol, if you 04 Inspire has a sitcker, what exactly can one use this bay for? Seems rather useless if you cannot store items in there for travel.

BTW, My 05 Inspire says nothing about not using the rear passenger side bay due to heat in the manual, nor in the bay.

Answers to a few letters on C9:

Ours holds 38 quarts per manual & per Cat mechanic. 38 includes 1 gallon in filter.

Dipstick was correct from factory with original stamped marks.
Road tube appeared to slobber oil during first trip. Back of coach & all of toad were oiled. Causes were partly an oil leak at pressure sensor added by CC. Look for unpainted sensor near road tube. Second cause was oil. Oil pressure was way low until first oil change. 47 PSI @ 2100 R/M is proper, 23 PSI is not. New oil reduced oil slobber & oil vapor out road tube.

Further reduced oil on toad & coach with plastic pipe shoved up road tube. Oil vapor now goes out below engine, not on side of engine.
Oil consumption much reduced after first oil change @ 1778 miles. Only oil leak was due to oil sender mounting. Tightened about 1.5 turns to stop leak.

Oil problems were fixed in first 5000 miles. Engine used only 1 gallon in second 5000 miles.
