Backup Camera Problem

I can not remember if this problem has been posted recently to the site, if so I apologize for the repeat. I always travel with my backup camera on, and have done so for the past 6 years and have never had a problem.

Recently on my new coach, after driving for an hour, the monitor screen showing the toad start to become dark, and the color is distorted. Within a half an hour you can not make out anything on the monitor. But it is working as you can see bright items or flashes on the toad.

While this was happening I switched the screen to cd and radio menus and the screen was fine, no problems with color or clarity.

After stopping for about 10 minutes, engine off, the backup camera picture returned to a perfect picture. I ran the backup monitor for 12 hours while parked to see if there was an internal heating problem, it worked perfect no problems.

The next day after driving for an hour or so the same problem happened. All connections in the dash and at the camera in the closet have been checked.

Any ideas or help would be really appreciated. The monitor is a Pioneer AVH-P6400CD.

We have the same problem. I have tried for over a year to solve this problem. The symptoms are identical to yours. I believe that it is a heat problem, but I have seen the camera go off with a bump in the road. I have asked Russ at CC support many times and he finally thinks that it is a faulty Mito box. He has sent me a new one but I have not yet torn the dash apart to replace the old one. Very disturbing.

CC has a service bulletin that addresses a wire short in the system, but I have had 3 different shops repair it so far and no change. The team at Beaudry in Tucson has "fixed" it twice but again "no bueno".

Anyone with a real fix here would be great.

I was wondering if you were still around as we haven't heard from you lately. Where are you anyway? Why don't you send us an email off the Yahoo board, please.
We had that same thing happen with our back-up monitor. There is a silver box under the dash behind the Pioneer unit. Sometimes we would disconnect the box and then reconnect it and it would work for awhile. Finally we had it changed out and it solved the problem for us. Hope this helps.

Because Lazydays could not find a reason for the problem they actually replaced the camera hoping that that was the answer. It still works just sometime. The reply from Dale Hollick sounds promising, I will ask Country Coach about the silver box behind the Pioneer unit.

I had the same problem with my coach.
A CC tech fixed it at the Moltrie ralley.
There was a broken fuse holder, which when the coach was build cc installed an in line fuse for the backup camera, when they installed the fuse holder they used tiewraps which broke the fuse and fuseholder. This fuse is located right front, in front of the passenger feet under the dash.

I have an appointment with Carrier and Son's RV tomorrow for them to fix, CC seems to think that the box Dale referred to is overheating. I will post the outcome after my appointment. Hope it is simple.

I have a 99 Allure that had an intermittent back-up camera from July 1999 until I dressed up the wiring at the point where it connected to the camera. The wiring was just hanging in the void between the back body panel and the inner wall. I bundled and tied it all toghether and secured it together with zip ties. Prior to that the factory replaced the monitor and looked at it a seveal rallies. Since I tied the wire bundle togther in Augutst 2004 it has not failed.

Hi John,

I was wondering what the outcome on your Backup Camera problem was.
I've been having the same problem for several months now and have an appointment at Carrier & Sons on 10/17 followed by an appointment at the factory on 10/31 to try and fix 66 (sic) problems I'm having and this is one of major ones.

It has been "serviced" 4 times so far, twice by CC factory team stationed at Beaudry RV in Tucson. The camera fades out periodically but always works first thing (cold) in the a.m. After the first 3 service appointments (and after warranty expiration) Russ at CC support shipped me a new Mito box that was sure to solve the problem. I later called Russ again to MAKE SURE the Mito box was for my coach before I went in for the 4th appointment. Russ never called me back to verify this point. There are two issues here. The in line fuses to the power supply are the wrong type and need to be replaced with blade fuses. If that doesn't solve the problem, the box needs to be replaced.

Appointment # 4 was with Carrier & Sons in Eugene last Friday. In addition to (2) recalls on the coach, I took them the Mito box that CC sent me for installation. They tore everything apart in the dash and the upper cabinets including the TV looking for the old Mito Box that CC had sent. At the end of the day, they discovered that there is no Mito box in this coach and in fact the problem was the silver box attached to the Panasonic camera itself. Of course they didn't have one of these and could not get one prior to my leaving town. Part # is TW-CC100B. I still don't have a backup camera that works.

Good luck to everyone with this problem. Incidentally, the folks at Carrier & Sons are first rate.
CC factory service (with their 11 bays) are now booked well into 2006 for service. They need some help!

Hi Brian and others interested in this problem.
Sorry for the lengthy delay in responding, I have been waiting to loose the back up camera again, but I haven't.
Carriers found a video cable behind the display with yellow connectors that was making intermittent contact. They brought the cable up to where I could easily find it and pushed them together tightly. I eventually had to tape the connectors together. That has fixed the loosing the picture when hitting bumps in the road.

The solution to gradually loosing the picture was to replace the MITO controller box. Country Coach said they would not replace it unless it happened again. They felt it overheated. I do not agree as it was only 60 degrees outside and about 70 inside. The box in my coach can be accessed by removing the map cabinet in front of the passengers seat.

So far I have had no further problems with gradually loosing the pictures. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I had the following symptoms with my backup camera.

Always work on morning startup

Screen image would flash to shadow or blank after a while Worst performance on rougher roads Seemed to be worse whith the sun behind me.

I had it to Buddy Gregg in Knoxville twice with no improvement. It turned out to be the RCA connector under the dash. The wire was tangled a little with other wires and that tension would alter the degree of contact in the connector. I simply aligned the run under the dash and firmly seeted the connector and have no problems at all in the year since then.
