Cummins temp

On a recent trip in Colorado my engine temp (Cummins ISL 400 hp) reached 224 over LaVeta pass. I consider this to be too high. The outside temp was 87 and I generally travel several thousand pounds below gross and tow a Trailbalzer. To my thinking, if the cooling fan is operating correctly (going to high speed at about 195 or so) then engine temp should not go above about 205 or so. Any contrary opinions. CC has agreed to have my fan speed checked under warranty.

It was my understanding from a discussion with a technician, that the cummins engine needs to rev RPM's up to get the fan to cool better.
They suggested that you manually down shift to bring the RPM's up to get more cooling. I am not sure, as they did not know, if the Cat's work the same way. Normally when you get on a grade your RPM can get lower thus not allowing the fan to cool enough.

Thanks for the input. I did as you suggest, lower gear-higher RPM as well as turning off the A/C. My Silverleaf showed 224 then automatically the screen changed to show a hight temp engine condition and then the red warning light came on. All in all, it seemed too high for me.

went over La Veta pass last fall at appox 85 degrees F and the temp never got over 190 on the engine and 215 on the tranny, but then I had her wound up above 1800 rpm in what ever gear necessary.

The fan on the C13 is hydraulic so I don't think the engine speed affects the fan speed. My fan speed seems to be directly proportional to the engine temp. Pulling a long grade the fan runs high enough to hear it in the front of the coach.
