Front Axle Lubricant

Two questions about adding lubricant to the front axles:

First, how high should the level be? I see the notation and arrows showing the minimum, which appears to me to be just barely some showing, but what is the maximum one should fill it to?
Second, is it normal to have some metal shavings on the magnet on the fill cap? I had quite a bit on the driver side, none on the copilot side.

Al,

First of all, metal found could be a indication of a bearing failure and warrants further investigation.
When I service my hubs I usually pull out the center rubber plug and fill to the edge of that opening.

Hi AL,

The first time I checked the fluid by removing the center rubber plug,

I found small steel chips on both sides. I sucked the oil out with a syringe and replaced it. Saved the oil just in case. For every oil check thereafter, I again suck the oil out, inspect it for chips, and replace it with fresh oil - no evidnece of chips since the first time.

If chips show up in the future, then it would be time for a bearing inspection.

Sorry to ask the obvious question but I don't have my manuals nearby - what weight oil should I use for replacing - I assume I have oil bath but haven't checked?

It's the same weight oil you use in the rear-end (differential).
75/90 if my memory serves me right.

My coach is close to the vintage of your coach & my manuals call for 80W-140 gear oil.
