New Chassis (cranking battery)

Yahoo Message Number: 20292
Hi Folks,

After 5 yrs and 6 mos, the starting battery gave up - good voltage but no energy.

I purchased a replacement from Interstate Battery Co. In Santa Maria CA for $169.95.

It was produced in Nov 2005, 0.5 in. electrolyte above the plates and 12.5vdc measured. The other two 8 Ds are in good shape probably due to desulfators connected to each one.

Fred;

I just checked with Interstate Battery in Columbus, Oh. on 8D batteries.
They quoted me a price of $127. I need two new ones for the house.
I know there is more than one varity of 8D, do you have the specs on your new one? And what can you tell me about your desulfunator? Steve

Try checking at Costco or Sams Warehouse. I was shopping at one of the two last month (I can't remember which one) and they had an 8D for $109. I can't remember what brand either.

To those looking for new 8D batteries, you should not shop by price.
Even tho they are of the same size, the CCAs and amp hour ratings will probably be less in the cheaper battery. You get what you pay for.

I checked Sams about 2 weeks ago. They had Champion 8D batteries for about $125 each. If I remember correctly, those 8D's had reserve capacity of 445 minutes at 25 amps. I've check around and that is pretty good. Now I am no battery expert, but that seems to be how deep cycle batteries are classified and it also seems to me that reserve capacity is the number that you want to look at when using them in an RV.

For what it is worth.

For whatever reason, Sam's doesn't carry 8D's in Ohio??? And after last nights PBS program on Walmart selling the USA to China. I'd rather not go to Sam's or WalMart.
I did find a really good article on 8D's. One good point, the thicker lead plates do last longer, thus the weight of the battery is a key.

I'll try to post the article.

Hey Doug;

I was at Interstate on Saturday. 8D-MHD were $126, plus tax, plus $10 to have them put them in. Had a dead cell on one of the house batteries. Or almost dead.
The 8D-MHD are the one with the thicker lead plates, will take more cycling. The Interstate on Westerville Road is dist. center now. Batteries were mfg in Dec.05 FYI
