Emergency engine stop switch

All,

I am looking for the emergency engine stop switch on my 2004 Inspire, #51008. CC tells me that it is in the engine compartment mounted on the ceiling or sidewall, but I have not been able to locate any such switch. Don't know what I am looking for, so that may be the biggest problem. Would appreciate help from the group to identify this switch and it's location.

Jon, I do not have an Inspire. I have an Allure. My kill switch is located in the upper right corner of the engine compartment. It is a round (about 2 inches in diameter) red push/pull switch.

That would be great if I could get a picture. I have gone through all the books that came with the coach and found no mention of an emergency kill switch, other than on a wiring diagram. It indicated #16 awg red wire from the stop switch to the ECM "c" connector. I have yet to locate the switch or wire.

My Inspire has no emergency engine stop switch. Same function can be had from battery disconnect switch near chassis battery. I have used battery disconnect switch to stop Caterpillar repeatedly due to electric problem.

Thanks for that information. I do know where the chassis battery switch is located. Hope it works the same for the Cummins engine. I will give it a try.

Jon, do you have a rear service switch ? If so look to see if it has center off. That is what Prevost uses as the rear shut off.

I have a rear battery disconnect switch. Would that be the service switch you refer to? My switch has "off & on" positions only.

If your engine is afire or running amok, it would likely be safer to use the battery disconnect switch thereby avoiding opening the engine bay.
When that need might arise, I hope your battery bay door is not locked.
Maybe I should mount a second fire extinguisher in the battery bay.
Trouble is, I know from experience, I will not know where the extinguisher is when it is needed. More "presence of mind" would help me in future emergencies.

There may be those who will dissagree with me but I feal the major reason for the "Shut down switch" is for the benifit of a service tech to be able to shut down the engine conveniently or in an emergency when working on it.

For those following the saga of the Fan Controller, the process today determined for certain the unit was bad. Terminals AB were 0 ohms, CD and EF both had readings within a few ohms at 834/837, as both were at the same temperature(cold). The only indication of function was as the 2 wire connector when cycled in and out, was the fan slowed up momentarily.

I agree with you on the emergency cut off switch, it's main function is for the guy working on the engine.
If there is a fire or something else wrong in the engine compartment I'm not going there.

I took the pictures and posted them on the Photos section of this board. Go to the secong page and stop at "WB3DJU Intrigue Rollingghetto. It is the near the bottom of the photos. The last 2 pictures are of the famous fan controller which I tackle tommorow.

Thanks for the picture of the engine stop switch. I do not have anything like that in my engine compartment. Others have indicated that the battery disconnect switch will kill the engine if all else fails. I plan to give that a try next time I use the coach.

Jon,

If you can physically identify the fuel cutoff solenoid, the switch is usually wired so that it supplies 12V to that solenoid. Basically, the switch opens that 12V lead when it is depressed. That drops the solenoid and cuts off the fuel. Mine connects just a few inches from that solenoid, right at it's connector plug and is an obvious addition to the wiring. Of course my coach is considerably older, but that's where I've seen it attached on other brand coaches too. Seems to be a fairly standard addition.
