death valley

We are in Bakersfield, CA heading to Furnace Creek (Death Valley), CA.
Possible Route #1- My Garmin and Yahoo show CA 178 to CA 395 to CA 190 and come in on the west side?235 miles.

I drove that route in a sports car in 1983 and had lots of fun. . .makes me wonder if that is the way I want to go in a 40' coach towing.

Possible Route #2 - I can do Barstow via CA 58, then I-15 (boring), swing around to CA 127 and then CA 190 on the east side to get there. . .310 miles.

Anyone done #1 route? Would you do it again?

Last October we entered Death Valley from the West on 190. My Garmin 2610 didn't want me to do it, but what does she know? I was coming down from Lee Vining. It is not a route I would recommend, it can be a challenge especially if someone is coming from the other direction. There were a couple of sharp, tight turns where you need the entire road especially with a toad. Not to mention the pucker factor for the shotgun when there is no road on the right side, just a drop off.
Bottom line, sports car yes, big coach no. Also, this time of year weather could be a consideration making it even more dicey.
