Wi-Fi in service

I havent used my Wi-Fi card once since I installed the Verizon Broad-band service carde, which has worked perfectly for me in 12 states now. Am currently in Columbus, MS, sorta in the sticks, and it works well. Can't receive Wi-'Fi here. Once in awhile I have to raise the laptop about 14" higher and sit it on the back of the Pax seat to get a better signal but other than that its been perfect.

I am interested in the Wi-Fi Verizon for a summer of volunteering on the Oregon Coast where there is no wifi service. i am assuming this is satellite - based service? I have Verizon cell phones, is it connected to that service?

My husband and I have two pc cards vrom Verizon. While traveling through Oregon we had a very diffucalt time receiving a signal unless we were in a large town. Just recently I turned off one of the Verizon cards and went with Sprint. We now have one card with Verizon and one with Sprint. We will just have to wait and see. My husband and I both have laptop's so we need two cards.
This is the only draw back with full time traveling. We should get a dish installed on our coach.

Nope ... sorry that's not quite correct.

We have both the Nextel card and a Verizon card. You will only get Verizon broad band (EVDO) where available ... large metro areas. It falls back to 1xrtt service (kinda like dial up) in more rural areas.

Verizon service is pretty good and wide spread, and teamed with Nextel (now Sprint), we have had pretty good luck, but we have not traveled around as much as some folks here.

We are also pondering the Directway alternative (dish), but are not sure of the long term value yet.

I have used Verizon for several years (and a couple of other cellular providers prior thereto). We regularly summer on the OR coast, and cellular service of any kind (especially internet) is routinely lousy. Two years ago I went to Directway on the tripod. It worked fine!!! One year later I had a Datastorm/Motosat/Directway unit installed on our coach. I couldn't be happier!!!

I've used the unit in Northwestern Canada, all down the Pacific Coast, and have just returned from two months in Mexico. The unit has worked flawlessly with heavy use for the past year. I did make the mistake of failing to encrypt the unit, and especially in Mexico every body in the park was using my connection rather than the park wireless, with the consequence that it slowed our computers down substantially. So I've reluctantly had the unit encrypted since my return.

In passing it is worth noting that to some degree signal availability is a function of the footprint of the satellite to which you've been assigned; but in our fairly extensive travels (we're resident in the coach @ least 6 months of the year) we've yet to be unable to use the unit.

We have traveled the west, southwest, northwest, Mexico, Canada for 2 years with our datastorm system and could not be without it. Only one campground in 15,000 miles with too many trees to get out. There are both fixed dish systems and tripods available. There is no other choice for us.

I have to agree with Dick. There are still too many places in North America with beautiful scenary and no cell service. Virgin, UT is one of those places, right outside Zion National Park. We had no cell service for 2 weeks without driving 5 miles up the road but email was never interrupted.

2 months ago with our Verizon service, I added a Kyocera 650 AirCard for BroadBand internet use. Unlike other A/Cs, an antenna can be attached to the K-650 to boost the signal. The K-650 provides BroadBand speed via EVDO to 50+ broad footprint areas across the USA. When outside the broadband covered areas, you will get Verizon's XRTT (dial-up) speed. The cost is $60.00/mo. for unlimited use. So now we can attach an antenna plus an adaptor to either the A/C for the internet, OR, to our phones to avoid dropped calls while driving. Where signals are very weak, we also have a dual band (analog/digital) signal amplifier #811201 by Wilson Electronics which is useful as we tour the USA Fulltime.

www.evdoinfo.com. The tech support at Wilson (866-294-1660) is very helpful.

FWIW We tried Wilson's "wireless" signal amplifier, but exchanged it for the more reliable signal via the "wired" signal amplifier.
If going this or a similar route, consider buying from same mfg. so connectors are compatible. We have zero afilliation to Wilson mfg.
It just works very well for us.
