Honda CRV issues

FYI to all who have a late model CRV.

Mine started to growl at me lately while driving at slow speed and making sharp turns. Reminded me of the noise failing CV joints made.
It had 23,000 on the odometer is still in warranty. Took it into the dealership and was told they had one in the day before for the same complaint. Turned out to be a read end oil service was needed.

Picked up mine today and was told it was the same problem. Rear end oil change needed. Now the service manual says 60,000 before the rear ends need changing. However the service writer says Pilots and Ridgelines require it at 7500, again at 15,000 and then every 15,000 there after. Same all wheel drive systems on all three units. The dealership is thinking that one should plan to do the service every 20,000. Cost about $70 if you have them do it.

Short version, if you hear a growling change out the rear end oil.

I just changed my rear differential oil on my '03 CRV this weekend.
Problem disappeared.

While my odometer read 29,000, the actual miles were significantly higher since I had towed it a bunch.

The operation is a piece of cake. Buy Honda Dual Pump Fluid (two quarts - but only 1.1 to fill), and new washers (mine were fine but you ought to have them in case). The drain/fill plugs are reachable without raising the rear end. The only tools needed are a 1/2 inch socket drive and a pump that fits a quart bottle (any auto parts store, or probably Walmart).

Save yourself eighty bucks.

Remember, this is for AWD only.
