Photos of my Sharp 32" flat screen retrofit

We got tired of the small head banger TV so decided to install a new Sharp Aquos 32" flat screen. We went with the LC32D6U because we could remove the speakers and stand and just use the screen.
Companion to this job was the installation of a Bose 3-2-1 GS audio system. See the separate album for pictures of where we put the subwoofer and speakers.

Had absolutely no problem matching the honey oak finish of the stock cabinets. Removed the head banger shell, put a new side face on the left hand equipment cabinet, cut down the right hand cabinet and made a new side face for it. Cut a wider cut out in the bulk head so we could recess the TV totally out of the way. First, unstapled the Vinyl/foam covering and held it out of the way while we cut the wider gap, then trimmed it and stapled it back.

Made a very strong Oak housing for the flat screen, which is actually no heavier than the puny TV we took out, and mounted it top, bottom and both sides. Note the cushion pads all around for the TV to ride on. This setup is actually stronger than the original.

Works fantastic and total cost, including audio and TV was under $3,000.

I did it along with a buddy of mine who is a pretty good cabinet maker. It really was pretty easy. We used stock oak material from Home Depot & Lowes, honey-oak stock stain and spray can polyurethane.

Could be done a lot faster the second time now that we have the cabinets figured out.
