Screen Door Latch Alternatives

Ok, so I just broke the second screen door latch in 3 months. The first time the handle broke off, this time the latch part broke off.
This replacement cost me $20 at Beaudry (yea, I know). Anyone know of an alternative to the plastic latch or a place to buy them cheaper?

I had the same problem. I couldn't find a replacement right away so I put on one of those little cupboard door latches, the one that mounts with 2 screws and has a spring loaded roller that snaps past a small lip on the door frame. This little roller catch costs around 25 cents so I bought a spare for when it wore out. At that price it couldn't last long, right? WRONG, I have been using it for over 2 years now and it shows no sign of wear.

Trouble free and dependable. It works for me. A handle on both the inside and outside of the door finishes it off.

No idea if it is the same latch ... plastic lever with white arrow pointing down labeled 'open' ... but I bought two from CC parts for $7 each. First thing the guy asked was 'did you push down on the lever, or out'. Must be a common problem. We have never pushed out, but it looked like the it was weakened at some point somehow.

Dealing with CC parts was a no brainer ... I talked to Ken ...

About a month ago someone had the same problem and I posted our fix.
We cut a piece of flat steel the size of the plastic handle holder, drilled holes where the screws are originally and then put in longer screws. Works well and has not broken since repaired. John 2002 Allure

I read your post last month, however, this time we didn't break the handle side. This time the latch side broke. Does your metal solution fix that also?
