Hwy 2 in Western Washington

Hwy 2 in Western WashingtonHI all, We are headed from Blaine, Wa. in northern Washington to Missoula, Mt. in July. Thinking about taking Hwy 2 (more scenic) than I-90. Is it feasible and if so is there a good place to stay in Western Washington. I seem to remember there was someone on our forum who hosted at a campground along Hwy 2, but having a senior moment and can't remember who it was.

Hwy 2 is a very easy drive in a coach with a toad. I came across Hwy 2 in the beginning of June last year and it was very scenic . We made a few stops along the way as well. There is a neat little candy shop along the river about 10 miles west of Leavenworth with adequate parking for the rig across the road.

Also, Leavenworth is a great town to explore. We left our coach parked at the candy shop and took the car into town for the afternoon. When we got to Leavenworth I noticed there were several places we could have parked right off the main road with the coach.

As far as camping goes, we went about 40 miles north of the Hwy2/Hwy 97 junction to the town of Chelan.
They have the most beautiful county campground I have ever been to and it sits right on the lake. In early June there were many spots to pick from and no problem maneuvering in a 42 foot coach.

The lake there is pristine. We took a float plane up to the western end of the lake to Stehekin. You can also take a boat or hovercraft. I would highly recommend it.

From there we took back roads to the Grand Coulee dam and on to Spokane.

Sorry to be so long winded. I can't help it though, it was one of our favorite parts of our trip.

Just stayed at the county park on the Wenatchee River at Monitor about 5 miles northwest from Wenatchee on Hwy 2.Grass, trees, big spaces, 50 amp. Friendly people.

If you are headed from Blaine, the best bet for a Western WA campground would be Fidalgo Bay RV Resort in Anacortes, WA. Its a beautiful area and if you are not in a hurry you can spend a couple of days exploring Fidalgo Island and Whidbey Island. From Anacortes to Chelan/Monitor there aren't any good campgrounds. Make sure you pass through Monroe, WA in the morning because traffic in the later afternoon is terrible on Hwy 2. Once you clear Sultan, traffic is fine. There is room at the top of Steven's Pass to take a rest break in the ski area parking lot. If you are doing the trip in July, I would recommend WA State Hwy 20. It's even prettier than Hwy 2 and you miss all the ugly traffic in Everett and Monroe, WA. There is an overlook at Washington Pass that should have parking for a big rig and toad. Take Hwy 20 to Twisp, WA and stop at Riverbend RV Park. Its right on the Methow River and has lots of room for big rigs. From there, go to the Lakeside County Park in Chelan but you better make reservations in July. US 97 follows the Columbia River to Wenatchee, WA where you can pick up US 2 east. The Wenatchee River Country Park in Monitor is a great place to spend a couple of nights to visit Leavenworth, WA for charm and good German food.

Now...since we're headed east to Missoula, Mt. where would be a good place to stay in Eastern Washington. (I think I said Western in my first post...opps) We have been to Fidalgo Bay, Whidbey Island etc. and it is beautiful there. We'll probably be there again this Sept. with some RV friends for a get together.

Once you get east of Wenatchee I can't help as we have never been east of Wenatchee on US 2. When you get to Missoula, Jim and Mary's RV Park is nice, they added a number of new pull-thrus 2 years ago. In Couer d'alene try Blackwell Island RV, big sites and on the river.

We've never stayed at Pioneer because its all trees and our Motosat doesn't work well there. We like the views of the water at Fidalgo.
We know lots of folks who prefer Pioneer.

We've seen Jim and Mary's park, but have always stayed across the street at Jellystone...no trees and the satellites worked. I wish there was a park closer to Stevensville, Mt. that took big rigs. Black Rabbit in Hamilton may be large enough, but it is as far the other way from Stevensville as Missoula is.

BY ALL MEANS stop at Leavenworth, WA. There is a KOA there, and numerous state parks in the region. Leavenworth is a faux Bavarian Village, full of "artsy-crafsty" shops, beer halls, and other German foods. All set in a mountain valley. If you've never been there, it is worth a stop.

Hiway 2 is no problem .......

The KOA in Leavenworth is really tight for a 42' rig. We stayed there in a 36' fifth wheel and had a tough time getting into the space.
Our back bumper was 2" from the hill in the back of the space and the front was almost in the road. I would stil suggest Wenatchee River County Park in Monitor, WA and drive to Leavenworth. It's a lot less hassle in a big rig.

Hey there! The Icicle RV Park, Leavenworth is a great spot! We have 20 or so sites that will handle big rigs not 50 amp on all of them but the beautiful setting makes up for it.... right on the Icicle River... 4 miles to town. My wife and I manage this place and though it is an older park we are constantly making improvements to make it better.

It's best to make reservations... especially for the river view sites. Herb S. has been here and enjoyed it.

For those of you who have stayed in this park, this is a quick "update."
We were in the Palm Springs area a week ago and drove by the park. Still no street side signage indicating what was coming. There were a few RV's still there but most of the roads leading into the parking areas were blocked off.
In talking with a fellow in the office, he indicated it is his understanding that there will be "about" 400 houses built and 250 condos as well as "moderate" apartments for those attending a nearby school. It is being developed by a company out of San Diego called Taylor-Woodrow and it will be called Spanish Walk.

Hwy 2 Thanks for your suggestions. Only problem with Lake Chelan in July is it's packed. We think we'll be going the middle or towards the end of July and coming back to West. Washington in Aug.
It sounds like a nice trip with places to stay along the way.
