Park Near Williamsburg, VA-Recommendations?

From what I remember the sites were ok, with lots of trees. We had a 38' diesel then and it seemed to fit ok. Back then some sites offered phone lines for dial up and my notes say they didn't work well. Not sure what they offer 4 years later.

American Heritage RV Park is easy on and off the interstate and about 10 minutes from the city. You can buy tickets at the park and a bus runs to Williamsburg during the summer.

Sure -here is a run down. We live in Williamsburg and are familar with most of the parks.

Probably the most convenient are America Heritage and the Pottery Campground. Although we have not stayed at either of these, they are both convenient to I-64 and the Colonial Area in Williamsburg. Both are "commercial campgrounds", but they are reasonably spacious and clean. Not sure if these have 50 amps, cable and wi-fi but the books will tell you that.

Technically there are two KOA's but they are adjacent and owned by the same people. They have 50 amps, cable and wi-fi. Have stayed at these a couple of times. The biggest gripe I have is they are on the pricey side and getting in and out of your campsite can be a challenge as the entry and exit "roads" are not well designed.

Best to avoid the Anvil Campground, unless you don't mind trains running across the foot of your bed. The campground is right beside the tracks.

There is also a campgound at Jamestown, 6-7 miles west of Williamsburg. While the campground is set on the James River, none of the RV sites offer good views of the river. There is plenty of open space and the setting is plesant. But the owners have not invested a lot in the campround and you won't find cable or Wi-fi there but they do have some 50 amps, water and sewer sites. Hookups are "side-by-side" and you technically could be sandwiched in. And it is just about as pricy as the others. Worse, some weekends they have had some pretty wild events there. The campground does have a small beach on the James River, which serves as the scene for weekend parties. I have stayed there a number of times because it was convenient to my mother's house. If you go be sure to ask if there are any major events on the calendar when you will be there.

If you would prefer a park setting albeit with fewer "amenities" then head out route 5 toward Richmond about 10 miles from Williamsburg to Chickhamony Park.
This is a very plesant setting on the banks of the Chickhamony River, great for kyaking and canoes. This is a county park and is more in kin with campgrounds at state and national parks. Usually very quite, but can be very busy on holiday weekends, like Memorial Day and fourth of July. This park is more affordable than the others, but you won't find 50 amps, cable or wi-fi. If you want scenery this is your best bet.

There is also a county park on route 143 about 1/3 of the way to Newport News - maybe 15 miles from Williamsburg. I have not stayed or visited the campground there but others have told me it is very plesant.

So there you have it. If you are looking for a commercial campground with more services, head for American Heritage or The Pottery Campground. If you enjoy a state or national park like setting on the banks of a small river, and can live without 50 amps, cable and wi fi, head for Chickhamony.
