TV antenna change out

Yahoo Message Number: 22989
Being very unhappy with the small omni-directional TV antenna (looks like a dinner plate) that CC installed on my 04 Intrigue I recently completed installation of a Concord antenna by Braund. This an antenna that has a control panel to raise, rotate and lower the antenna head. The head looks a lot like the Winegard batwing. Unlike the batwing this antenna does not employ an amplifier in the antenna head. Rather it is a wall mounted amplifier so things got a little complicated in the installation. Anyone contemplating doing this same changeover is welcome to contact me and I will be happy to share some dos and don'ts.

Is the TV really that important. For years we had to keep fixing the bat wing when it got hung up on a tree, I for one am very happy with the new antenna and the low Sat. dish installed on the early 05s. The few times we can not see the TV are sometimes a blessing.

Your post is quite timely, I ordered a Winegard motorized Sensar antenna yesterday and am curious about all of the questions that you have already answered. If you wouldn't mind: Where did you put the new antenna? My hope was to use the same spot as the useless one I am replacing.
Where did you locate the control panel? Where did you get the power for the control panel? Did you run into any special problems that I can anticipate? Now that you are done, is there anything that you would do differently?

Thank you in advance for your help.

That Braund antenna is one of my greatest frustrations. It will go down but not up. It has grabbed two tree branches. CC repaired the gear once ineffectively. I replaced the "antenna" part and the gearing.
The monitor keeps telling me " caution the anntena is up" when it is down. Actually have used it twice in 4.5 years for TV reception.

I hope you have a much better benefit cycle.

David,

Here's the skinny. Located the antenna directly behind the pass side air horn. This location is directly over the audio equipment cabinet.
Drilled one large hole (2 3/4 round and about 2 deep) and one small hole. The large hole is because the Concord has a bulb on the bottom of the base that must be below roof level. The small hole was for the 12 vdc line to the wall amplifer which I located in the upper cabinet directly in front of the pass seat. An additional third small hole was for the antenna coax. By using this location the antenna coax will drop directly into the audio cabinet and can be fed behind the monitor panel, around the corner and into the front cabinet along with the 12 vdc to the controller. From there an additional coax feeds back to the Winegard distribution panel and plugs into the antenna input point. For me I had to add a DC block at this point because this input point also feeds 12 vdc up to the antenna head on the existing antennas. This 12 vdc is not used by the Concord. So now the front cabinet has both the controller (up/down/rotate) and the amplifier. I did not use the existing antenna location because of the difficulty of running the 12 vdc line. This may or may not work for you since you are using a Winegard which may be a bit different from the Concord.
You can easily find the required 12 vdc for the controller in the back left corner of the Windgard distribution panel. Mine had a pigtail that I spliced into.

As for the additionl post by Dean: He noted that his coach is a 95.
If his antenna is of the same year there have been many improvments in the Concord since then. Especially a metal gear instead of a plastic one.
Hope this helps.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Your choice of locations for the antenna sounds excellent. I had planned to struggle with the wiring to locate the new one in place of the old but I like your idea better. I hope to do the installation within the next two weeks but may come back looking for more advice.
I appreciate the help.

David,

Not to deter your decision but.....If your new antenna uses an amplifier in the antenna head and therefore requires 12 vdc uplink to the head you may be better off using the current location. Remember, the Winegard antenna input point on the back of your Winegard selector panel has a dual role; it receives the antenna input but it also sends the 12 vdc up to the antenna head. So, that location requires no wiring for the coax--it is already there. Conversely however, you will still need a different 12 vdc source for your new control panel to raise and lower the antenna. My location serves that need much better. Think it through carefully and I am always willing to help, even with the work if we are anywhere near at the time you plan the job.

We are getting a new CC and they are not using the OMNI antenna anymore. We happen to really like that antenna and it is on our 05 and works great.

I am amazed that your Omni "works great". Even Winegard informed me that this antenna was not very adequate for motor homes. It was originally designed for marine application whereby the water acted as an extended ground plane. If you want one you have come to the right place--just holler.

Hi Lyle,

Thanks for the offer...where do you live and how much do you want for it?
In the beginning out Omni did not work hardly at all, the CC change the coax and it worked better, then CC service actually raised it up, at our insistence and moved it so the antenna had a clearer view and walla, it works wonderfully now! We actually hate loosing it because we pick up all of the local channels, HD and digital and program them thru the RCA HD Direct TV receiver.
We also know another 05 Magna owner who likes his and it works well. But CC has stopped using them across the board.

It was moved just behind the fantastic fan, raised up on a 4 block so the antenna has 360 clear view. They anchored the cable down to the top of the roof. It works great. Hope this helps, Dale
