Oil Blow-By

Yahoo Message Number: 23459
I just picked up a 2006 Inspire DaVinci. However, after driving it approximately 25 miles home with my Saturn in tow, I had a nice sprinkling of oil on the passenger half of the Saturn. When I asked a mechanic at Buddy Gregg's about it, his comment was, "It has a CAT in it - it will have oil blow-by. If you take it to a CAT shop they will just reroute the hose and you will have oil somewhere else." From what I have read here and on the CATRV forum, that is probably more or less correct. However, has anyone discovered an optimum location for the discharge end of the hose to minimize the amount of oil that gets on the toad?

Hi John and Linda,

I had this problem with our 2000 Allure but much less.
I attached a plastic vented bottle to see how much volume per trip miles, then I had firm evidence to present.

You might have too much oil because CC may not have calibrate the dip- stick correctly. Too much oil can cause your problem. The dip- sticks are calibrated by the coach manufacturers to accomodate their particular coach configurations. To verify, at next oil/filter change put in exactly the amount of oil the CAT engine book calls for, then see what the dip stick says.

I agree, can you imagine the other drivers on the road if all CAT's had enough blow by to get car windows sticky. You have to much oil in the engine. Blow by is someone's joke.

We had oil issues and black smoke and oil on our trailer when towing.
Now that they have fixed the dip stick level we are now running 3 quarts lower which meant we were 3 quarts high. Probably contributed greatly to the oil all over the place. Second they flashed our motor and it stopped the black smoke so now the trailer does not have oil laced black smaoke all over it when we travel. Just did 18 hours of driving and not a it of oil or black smoke on the trailer.
We also had the fans checked and now the transmission cools down when put into neutral which it never did before. It seems rather frustrating that this is so difficult to solve for everyone but I guess the service centers do not know this stuff.

I would like to thank everyone for their comments and suggestions. I will check into all of them - if I find one over-riding factor, I will be sure to post what it was. Again, thanks for all of your help.
