Dometic Ice Maker Removal

Yahoo Message Number: 23641
My wife would like me to remove the ice maker from the freezer section of our Dometic New Dimensions refrigerator. Has anyone done this to gain more freezer space? Are there any parts needed to cover up where the ice maker attaches to the rear wall of the freezer? Any advice would be appreciated.

The Dometic ice maker is a joke. I had mine removed so we'd have additional freezer space inside the coach. (We carry a 100 lb freezer in one of the baggage bays). I used the water supply line from the Dometic to supply h2o to a small U-Line icemaker that really makes ice. I took out the uncomfortabe "J" couch on the starboard side, and had a computer desk made for that space; said desk incorporating the U-Line,a pedestal with top providing spsce for two coputers. The passenger seat when turned 180 degrees has a knee-hole on one side of the pedestal for my wife's computor. On the other side of the pedestal, I installed a third captain's chair (with kneehole space) so I can comfortably use my computer. 'Tho married, we don't share computors or tooth brushes.

I've had this new set-up for two years without a problem one. We use our coach (Intrigue 10861)for approximately 6 mos of the year, so all systems are well used. It's no biggy, to remove the Dometic ice maker as long as the h2o supply is well capped---or diverted to another usage as I had mine done. I like lots of ice--particulary when we're in Mexico--and I hate schlepping and/or storing the ice. The U-Line makes mor than enough ice for all our needs. This is about the 5th U-Line I've owned and every one has been a jewel.

All best rog

Rog,

I have been following this thread and others as we are in the research mode of (in the next couple of weeks) purchasing a Diesel DP coach. I especially liked your words on "not sharing computers" and the installation of a computer desk accessable from both a recliner and the rotated captains chair.

Sounds like you also have some nautical backgrourd as do I. I have a U-line ice maker on my 50 foot MY that as you said "really makes ice". If you have the time/and or inclination could you post in the gallery and or send me by email photos of your modification/addition of the computer desk??

Thanks,
Tim

I too would like to hear a "how-to" for the removal of the ice maker.
I put a valve in the water line but haven't attempted removal (yet).
BTW, I took out my loveseat and put in a drop-leaf table with a drawer and a secretary's chair plus a Laz-E-Boy chair. Here is a photo if you're interested:

Ken,

I took mine out about four years ago. It was straight forward. I filled in the holes with white silicone. I disconnected the water line and pulled it out back. There is a valve for it in back accessible thru the outside access panel. I now use the waterline to feed my awning cooling fan.

The desk chair? Yes it's on wheels, but no, it doesn't move at all when we are traveling. I should be able to train our dog so well!
