Hurricane heater - dumb question

On our coach there is no separate expansion tank or water fill location for the Hurricane heater so I assume it is all part of the main engine radiator cooling system.
Is this the way newer coaches are set-up or do they have separate systems?

We have a 2001 Intrigue and the overflow tank for the Hurricane is in the engine compartment on the left side just to the left of the oil dipstick. We were having problems with the Hurricane discharging fluid and they put on a larger tank that holds 6 gallons of anti-freeze.

Yes, my Intrigue uses the engine radiator as the expansion tank. Not a dumb question though, since neither the Hurricane or CC manuals/diagrams describe the set-up.

As I understand the Hurricane system... the water is circulated from the engine cooling supply (expansion tank, radiator, engine block, etc) through the Hurricane unit , via the Hurricane's pump, to the heat radiators inside the coach. This way, the engine provides heat, if needed, and some heat to the water heater. If your Hurricane unit is turned on.. even if heat is not called for... feel the pump in Hurricane bay and see how hot it gets from the circulating water from the engine.
I read in an earlier post that CC might have gone to a hydronic-only water heating system... but I have no first hand info on that.
The manual warns to check the clamps after a couple of weeks of use to make sure there is no loss of coolant from the system (and engine).
I'm not sure but I think that the Hurricane system would preheat the engine in cold weather.

There are no dumb questions. The Hurricane in your coach is plumbed through the engine and the fluid level is maintained from the engine coolant tank. Please call us if you have any questions at 800-925- 6260. Also visit us on the web at www.rixens.com
