Air system input

Yahoo Message Number: 25804
My coach died in my driveway and will not restart. I am trying to use a comealong to pull it about ten feet backwards to get it clear so I can get my other vehicles out. The air system is low, about 60 lbs., and I think the brakes are starting to lock up. Where do you connect an air compressor to put air in the system to unlock the brakes?

Al,

There should be an air connection inside the drivers bay that is used for towing.

You can also manually back off the spring brakes if you know how.

If you mean the female quick-disconnect, I tried that. I had 125 lbs. on my compressor, but the tank gauges stayed at 60 lbs. and the brakes remained locked.

I know you can get air OUT of that fitting, because I have seen discussions of airing up your tires from it. But it did not work for me trying to put air in there.

If there is another air fitting, I can't find it.

Yes Al, that is the one I was talking about. After hooking that up did you go release your brake control button in the cab ?? 60 lbs is about the release point for maxi's. You will need to get air into the system to release the brakes.

Also as I mentioned you can physically back off the spring brakes.
There is a rubber plug in the back of the piggyback can. There is usually a "key" on the can that goes in there. It can then be backed off until your brakes release. You'll need a large wrench to use with the key.

Whatever you do DO NOT UNBOLT THE SPRING CAN !!!!!! That will result in a very dangerous situation. If you are in doubt feel free to call me and I'll walk you through it. I can be reached at 760-470-2300.

I just hooked up the compressor and plugged in the quick-disconnect.
I then watched the air gauge in the coach, and it stayed at 60 lbs. even though the air compressor said 125 lbs. Clearly, even though I was connected at that fitting, nothing was going into the air system. I have an email into Country Coach, I will see what they say. I don't want to mess with the springs. BTW, I have a thing that was printed in Destinations magazine, and they were talking about if you have to be towed the tow vehicle would need to connect air at something they called the "pressure protection valve". They had a picture of it. Nothing in that bay looks like the picture.

Al,

I'll be interested in hearing your solution. I have not had to use the drivers bay quick connect to air up my coach (I have used it to air up car tires as mentioned). I was given that information by CC tech support. Never had any reason to validate it. I'm not familiar with the location of the pressure protection valve you mention.
I would suspect that the valve you mention is under the front of the coach (on the drivers side) based on needs.

I put a male quick-disconnect on the center dump valve of the three mounted on the front bulkhead of the driver's side steering bay. I turned my regulator down to 40 lbs. and turned on the valve. I then ran the regulator up to 85. I went in the coach and the white needle was at 85. I wanted to make sure I had the correct tank pressurized, so I did the same to the outermost dump valve, ran it up to 85 and went in the coach. The red needle was at 85. Where the innermost dump line goes I don't know, but my brakes were released.
