Sealant on Roof mountings

Hi all:

Today I did my annual roof wash (should be seme-annual, but this year's travel schedule didn't allow for it) and found two cracks in the sealant used - one under my horn mounting and one under the wind sensor for my electric awning. No evidence inside of water, YET.

The sealant used has a light grey color and doesn't look like silicone. Does anyone know what it is? I assume I need to chip/clean out all the old sealant - there is a fairly large pile around both - nd then reseal. Why wouldn't silicone caulk work?

Bob, I don't think those little cracks go through. I would just apply a silicone over the cracked areas and have a beer. I maintained my roof just like yourself, and find the same cracks, and do the silicone and so far no issue, I have a 2003 Allure for sale and a new 2006. I also had a 1997 Allure so I have been at this about 10 years. The 303 has really helped, but does not stop the cracks.

Bob, I went to camping world and got some self leveling sealant. It seems to do a good job. I agree, you should just put it on the cracks and have a beer. Good luck, William, 03 allure

The sealant used by CC is Acryl-R. It is difficult to find as it is a "for professional use only." You won't find it at any place like Home Depot or Lowes, although they do carry a similar polyurethane sealant.
I was able to get a couple of tubes of Acryl-R from a RV dealer in Albany, OR. I forgot the name, but it was adjacent to Blue Ox RV Park in Albany. You might check with CC parts, too.

I tried several different brands of "self leveling sealants". Then I called CC and the guy who did my satellite installation and asked what they use because it is far superior to the brands I had tried. They use Dicor brand sealant and now it is the ONLY brand I will ever use on my coach. It stays soft, never cracks, flows over even the tinest cracks and is easy to remove if I even have a need to do so.
Here are a couple of suggestions... When I see a small crack or area that needs sealed (like around the air horns or fantastic fan or skylight dome in the shower), I just clean the area very well and then layer on another bead of Dicor. The Dicor flows out and seals perfectly to the old sealant. If I get too much Dicor in one place, I easily peel off the old sealant with a putty knife and then just squirt on another bead of Dicor. What a great product!

Hi Fred; How long has the Dicor been on your roof? What kind of shape is it in? Mine is 4 years old and looks and performs like new. I have no leaks and the Dicor remains soft and pliable and a perfect seal. I don't know who made the "one year" comment, but that certainly has not been my experience. If you know of a better product than Dicor that is compatible with the existing Dicor sealant on my coach and recommended for use on fiberglass roofs, I'd like to know what it is.

Hi Bob,

It is important to specify the type - I mentioned Dicor 501, you may have used a different type, it asppears that the Acyl-R is superior.

Do not use silicone... it does not flex enough after drying to work well on the roof. Plus it doesn't have some other desirable features of Acryl-R...(see below).
The stuff on your roof is Acryl-R. There are three products called Acryl-R: SM8200, SM8500, and SM5522. SM5522 is the Acryl R that is used on RV roofs (I think)... but the others might work just fine too. You can find and purchase the stuff through the internet.
Many RV repair shops also have it.
I bought some SM5522 for use in covering some new holes I drilled in a trailer (for wiring a solar cell panel)... but that is another story.

In your case: DO NOT BUY ANYTHING AT ALL!....:-)
Yep, don't buy anything if you aren't drilling new holes through the roof. One of the fantastic things about Acryl-R (and another reason you don't want to use silicone) is that it does not lose its "sticky". The cracks are probably only cosmetic, but to be sure, just use your finger and gouge out some of the material ... you'll find that there is fresh stuff under the surface film and you can mold it to recover whatever appeared to be a crack. It will restick to itself. (I have a 2000 Magna, and this technique worked just fine.... so the Acryl-R had to be 6 yrs old on my coach, yet it still was malleable!!!)

If you made a mistake and applied silicone, or if you made a mistake and dug out the old Acryl-R and discarded it, then I guess you'll need to buy a new tube and reapply. But if there is stuff on your roof, it can just have the surface skin disturbed and then the underlying stuff can be remolded to cover the cracks.

Opps I was half right ignore the cracks and have a beer, the silicone that I used was applied very sparingly, as I clean the roof regularly and did not want to deal with the stuff coming up. Also, I used it were I thought I saw small pin holes in the sky light. Thanks for getting the issue straight!!!!!!!

Well if that works, its fantastic. When I was up there, the sealant felt stiff, but I did not try to work it, since I didn't know to try. Soon as this wet weather moves east, I'll be on the roof and give it a try, since I didn't do anything until I got replies to my post. Occassionally I get things in the right order. Geez do I love this forum!!
