Dash Air

Hello,

My dash air is not cold but cool. I want to try to trouble shoot the problem on the chance that it might be that the temperature valve is not all the way to the cold side. Does anyone know where it is located and how to access it?

You did not say what model/year coach you have.
In my '04 Allure '36, the Heater Control Valves (one for driver, one for passenger) are located in front, on the passenger side. Access them through the front "hood". I had to replace mine at around 20K miles due to them locking up. Upon examination I found the seal around the motor and moving parts was broken and water had leaked in and corroded things.
If you do remove them (easy to do) to replace them, be sure to clamp off the hoses going to and from each one to avoid draining your system.

The dash air on my 07 Inspire #52029 blows cool air but not cold, regardless of switch settings. About 10 days ago it was working fine. I've checked the fuse (a 30 amp type 2) which seems OK. Does anyone have some simple suggestions before I take it to a shop. I am traveling in the Richmond, VA so if anyone can recommend a shop I'd appreciate it.

Yes...... locate the "Heater Control Valves (HCV)". Mine in an '04 Allure 36' are in the front end compartment, above and to the passenger side of the generator. There are two valves in mine. Black things with hoses and wiring connected. Debris and crud, sometimes found in new installations, blocks the valves from operating properly. Rapping on the valve case with a rubber mallet or other semi-hard device can loosen the debris. Should you choose to remove the valve to take it apart, be sure to do two things: 1) clamp off the hoses to prevent loss of fluids from your system, and 2) re-seal the HCV cover with silicone upon re-assembly.

I had an o4 Inspire which did the same thing you describe. It turned out to be the valve that opens to allow how water when the heater is turned on and closes to stop the hot water when AC is used. That valve on mine was located in the very front of the MH ahead of the generator. Yours will be different, but if that valve is not completely closing there will still be some hot or warm water circulating through the system and will cause the ac to only partially cool. If you find the hoses you should feel the hose on one side of the valve to be hot and the other cold when the ac is activated. If not, I suspect that valve.

I whacked on the passenger side control valve on my coach that was also causing warm air on the passenger side with A/C on and it didn't free it up. So, I had to buy a new one. Evans Tempcon now uses a different supplier for the valve. You can order a new one from Comfort Air (Dave) that the factory recommends - 616-454-2200. The new valve part # is RV218999 which includes an adapter pig tail to convert the old pin connections to the new one. However, it costs about $117 plus shipping. I noticed it has a slightly different ball valve configuration, so I'm hoping it will have true progressive heat control. The old one was either hot or cold.

Check their tech support section for how to test the temp control potentiometer to rule it out before concluding the valve is bad.

Turn on the air, go to the engine compartment and see if the compressor clutch is turning with pulley. If it is not, you probably have a leak and then the compressor will not engage once the refrigerant has leaked out. If it is engaged, and no cooling, then something more complicated.

As others so correctly pointed out, your problem is likely the "H Valve". I had two fail. The third has been the charm.
An interim work-around that kept me cool between valve swaps was to start the engine; turn the heat control on the dash to full hot; wait 30 seconds or so; turn the control to full cold. The valve would cycle and close completely, giving me unheated, conditioned air. I cannot explain why the valve would partially open when the ignition was switched off, but on both of the first two valves, that's exactly what happened.

To add to the list of suggestion for your dash a/c.
First, do you have a switch for outside air / recirculating. IF so make sure it's on recirculating,

Second, with the engine and a/c on, check the clutch on the a/c compressor, if she's a turning, go around to the side with the condenser fans. I had a bad connection on the fans and they weren't running. If you can't disipate the heat you don't get cold a/c.
Had corrosion on one of the connectors and all I had to do is replace it.

Thank you for your suggestion. The clutch did not engage with the A/C turned on, indicating low refrigerant as you suggested. I went to Wal-mart and purchased several cans of R134a in the auto section. One can had a guage and fill hose which could be moved to the other cans. It was quite easy to refill as the fill port was next to the compressor in the engine compartment and the cans had clear instructions. After loading the first can the clutch engaged and I started getting cooler air. I ended up putting in two more smaller cans and the A/C was really putting out cold air. One thing the can instructions did not mention was that the pressure would increase and then fall which turned out to be the cycling of the compressor and other parts of the system inside the coach. Anyway, thank you again. For less than $50 I have cold air and did not have to interrupt my trip to find a service center.

Glad to be of help. Bad news is that you still probably have a slow leak. However, it may take another two years before the refrigerant drops low enough to trigger the switch that turns off the compressor clutch so it could be cheaper to just watch and wait. Look around all the fittings on the A/C lines for oil, especially around the lines to the condenser where the radiator is and the fitting near the compressor.
