Jim,

If you want a nice "star show" along the way, stop at Balmorhea State Park (close to I-10 at about exit 206 or 209). Then drive 45 miles to the McDonald Observatory near Ft Davis that night (check program schedules first). If you want to stay a day or two in this area, Davis Mountains State Park is a nice stop - just 11 miles from the observatory. http://mcdonaldobservatory.org/
We have spent a few wintertime months in Kerrville at the Buckhorn Lakes RV Resort. Very nice park. Texas things in or near Kerrville include a free old time CW Band at Buzzie's BBQ on Thursday nights, the Road Kill Grill, great Mexican food at Mamacita's, James Avery Jewelry factory tour, YO Ranch Big Game Preserve, nearby German town of Fredericksburg, Mooney Aircraft tours (http://www.mooney.com) and hike to the top of Enchanted Rock State Park. Also, it is 75 miles to San Antonio on I-10 - well worth a day trip or even a few days stop.

If you would like specifics, email or call me directly.

You might want to stop In Las Cruces, spend a day in Old Mesilla. Take another day drive up through Organ, NM over the hill and Visit the White Sands Military research base, or drive on and picnic at White Sands National Park. If you are retired Military stop at the Best Van Camp in the West at Ft. Bliss, El Paso, Tx. Baseball season will have started and you can visit the park about a mile from the camp ground, ride the gondolas to the top of Ranger peak and see 2 nations, three states, 150 miles in all directions and 2 million people. If you promise to leave your pistols in the coach, cross the border and visit old Mexico, some great restaurants, and shopping. Horse racing and gambling are available at Sunland Park Race track just across the Rio Grande in New Mexico. South east El Paso has three famous Missions, an Indian reservation with entertainment. There are lot of places to shop, and Mexican food with a true Indian twist. There are museums to visit, a totally renovated old style Movie house, now featuring live Broad way Shows, Las Vegas style entertainment, Dance, Opera and Symphony Concerts. There's the University of Texas at El Paso, with its truly unique Tibetan architecture to visit. Don't forget to stop at Flying J at the state line or east of El Paso, It will be the last cheap diesel you'll see for awhile. When my better half was a young girl she and her parents would stop in Balmorhea and swim in the natural spring pools on there way to Mc Allen or San Antone.

Jim,

In Johnson City there is the LBJ Museum. Between Johnson City and Fredericksburg, on 290, the "Sculpture Ranch" was interesting. You will probably even meet the owner/operator Benini (sp) who bought the land from LBJ. He and his wife were very gracious hosts and will let you drive your toad around the whole place, including up to their house on the top of the hill. There is a silver Cadillac beside the road where you turn south to go into the ranch. Further west is the LBJ Ranch (NPS Park) and in Fredericksburg, don't miss the Nimitz Museum & the National Museum of the Pacific War. The Nimitz was closed in November 06 for renovation, so we have to go back. Stayed at the "Lady Bird Johnson County Park & Golf Course". Played 18 one day while there.

Don't miss the "Star Party" that Byron had in his message about the McDonald Observatory, if the weather is clear. Also, the next day, the Observatory tour was very interesting. We stayed at the Ft. Davis State Park campground. We are 36' and Byron 40', and we both found spots we could get into. You should probably drive through with your toad, or call them, to see if you will fit in what they have available.

We are doing this same trip in reverse.

Before you get to Texas, Kartchner Caverns near Benson AZ is definitely worth seeing. It is an amazing cave, but you must have reservations to tour the cave. Be sure to check out the AZ state parks website and make the Big Room tour reservation. The campground there is first come first serve, electric and water hook-up. The earlier you arrive, the better your choices. Arriving about 5:30 p.m. we still had several to choose from for our 40 foot coach, but no pull throughs were left.

We have stayed in several Texas State Parks and their website is very helpful.

Near El Paso is Huecho Tanks SP. It is very popular with rock climbers, but we enjoyed touring the rock art left by various Native American tribes. You must make reservations to tour this art as tours are only arranged as needed. You also need a day pass reservation to hike and climb around on the incredible rock mountains - only 70 people a day are allowed in. We camped here as well - 30 Amp electric and water hookup only.

I agree with others - go to Ft. Davis and do not miss McDonald Observatory's star party. It occurs on Tues, Fri and Sat nights. You will have less of a crowd on Tues obviously. Also agree with advice to stay at Davis Mountain SP. They have lots of full hook-up sites and pull throughs. They do take reservations, which I recommend making. We arrived at noon on a Monday and got the last full hook up site available...We stayed a week at this park and found plenty to do in the area.

Balmorhea SP is a nice overnight stop as is Monahans Sandhills SP.
I've reviewed both of those on rvparkreviews.com.

Hope this helps - We have loved Texas !
