Toad Rubber Smell & CDL License

I have had the burning rubber smell when I tow also. I think I have solved the problem with the last 2 times I have towed....I have made sure the HVAC Fresh Air is CLOSED before I turn off my tow car and connect it. This seems to have eliminated the problem.

Also, with regards to PA licensing of driver when driving vehicle OVER 26001 pounds, I just got off the phone with the CDL licensing department in Harrisburg, PA and I am listing here the quote from the manual and from the person. "You do not need a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) to drive military......, or recreational vehicles,..." Yes we do fall in the category of "over 26001 pounds" but as long as it is owned and driven privately and for no commercial use....no CDL nor Class B is required.

California has new rulesas of last October.....Governor Davis signed into law that any RV over 40' and/or over 26001# in GVWR is required to have a class B license. Some friends of our have a 36' Discovery by fleetwood and it is 300#s (26324#) over the weight limit so they also had to get a class B license as well. So consider yourself lucky if you live somewhere other than California! Dale

bikerbill,

You are correct that you do not need a CDL to drive a motorhome in excess of 26,001 lbs. I do not have a CDL. If you have a motorhome licensed in PA that has a GVWR in excess of 26,001 lbs, you need to have a "Class B EXEMPT license". The license will not permit you to operate a commercial vehicle, however, it is required for a privately owned motorhome. You will be issued a new license to accompany your current "Class C". When your current Class C expires, you will be issued a new "Class B EXEMPT".

If you are talking to Harrisburg, DO NOT MENTION CDL. Ask them what the requirements are for a private vehicle such as a motorhome with a GVWR in excess of 26,001 pounds. If you live in PA, you would get better answers at a Drivers Licensing Center. This matter can be confusing, but trust me, a regular Class C drivers license is not legal for a large motorhome licensed in PA.

If you want to contact me about this matter outside this BB, please email me directly. I will be happy to share additional info and help you in anyway that I can.

Thanks,
Dave G.
