HELP NOW! PLEASE. Water Heater on Intrigue 2001

Yahoo Message Number: 2054
Our Atwood 10 gal. water heater just blew the pressure relief valve.
We must have been having problems for the last few days and didn't know it. (hubby's seen water under the rig, but thought it was from sprinklers). My BIG question is how to stop water from going to the water heater in our 2001 Intrigue (the water heater is behind the pantry drawers.) We can't find any turnoff valve outside or inside the compartment. Is there one? We've turned off the water to the coach and that stopped it from running, but we'd like to turn the water back on sometime.

Thanks...

Hi Jan,

My coach started to leak through the pressure relief valve last January.

Sometimes it happens if some contamination stops the relief valve from closing completely. When the water pump is switched ON the water will continually come out of the relief valve if it isn't closed completely. Juggling with the relief valve lever may shift any contamination and get the valve to seat properly.

If not you will most likely need to replace the pressure relief valve.

It is a DIY job but you will need to know the correct size as I believe there are variations.

Mine was replaced free of charge by the dealer. I don't remember there being any need to turn off the water as once the pump is off and leakage stops. The water tank is in the basement and water can't run up hill.

Hope this helps.

I don't know of any way to shut off the heater. Turn the heat off to stop the pressure, both propane and electric. There are two main things that cause the popoff to blow or leak. The first is a lack of an air cushion in the tank. Drain the tank and refill it to make sure of the air cushion. The other more common problem is lime or sand in the valve which keeps it open. Take the valve off and clean it with Limeaway or CLR and it usually works ok. If this isn't the cause replace the valve. Hope this helps. jerry in NM.

Jan,

There should be bypass valve(s) on water lines on the front of the water heater behind the pantry drawers. The valves are used in the winterizing process to avoid anti-freeze from entering the heater unit. Might refer to winterizing instructions if you don't see them.

Hope this helps............Steve Intrigue #10673

Jan, If you intend taking the pressure relief valve out to clean it I would strongly recommend purchasing and installing a new unit.

Then clean the old one and hold it in reserve. If the old one is not repairable you will not have wasted too much time.

Having a spare pressure relief valve with you at all times might not be a bad thing.

Let us know how it turns out.
