Engine starts, Won't run

I have a 95 Magna with the 8.3C Cummins. The ignition switch has been replaced and the fuel shut off solenoid has been replaced. In addition, I have wired around the kill switch in the rear. This has been happening since the coach was new. Neither CC nor any of the CC technicians have been able to help me. Gillig has no suggestions that I haven't tried. Once the engine starts and runs it may go several weeks or even months without a problem. The Cummins technical people haven't been able to help. Have any of you encountered this problem? Any suggestions?

I'am confused..engine starts , won't run.... If it starts then it running! Unless you mean it turns over via the starter but doesn't fire up. Maybe I need more morning coffee.

I am not sure this is the same problem. My coach would be difficult to start after sitting for a few days. On many occasions, I had to use the mechanical fuel lift pump (a thumb muscle builder) to get the engine running. Ultimately, the fuel injection pump quit halfway down the Donner Pass on Hwy 80 to Truckee. The pump was replaced at great expense, and all starting issues were resolved.

Dean. That sounds like a good and maybe more likely posibility that might be worth Ken checking out. That relay is cheap thou. If it has never been replaced, now might be a good time.

The starts, won't run is terminology from the engine trouble shooting guide. The engine will start and run for a second or two and then dies. What is happening is the fuel shut off valve is dropping out and shtting off the fuel. I have talked with one other person that has had this problem. He said the fix was simple. He couldn't remember what is was. He said he had replaced the ignition switch several times and that wasn't the problem. I have replaced the ignition switch and the fuel solenoid and every relay associated with the starting and killing of the engine and the problem is getting worse. Any ideas?

I once had a coach that behaved as yours does. There was adequate voltage to the fuel shutoff solenoid on the engine, but not adequate amperage. The SOB manufacturer had used a long run of inadequate wiring from the key switch up front to the fuel shutoff on the engine.
The solution in my case was to install a solenoid (switch) in the engine compartment connected by battery cabling between the starting battery and the fuel shutoff solenoid on the engine. The existing key switch wiring was then used to activate the switching solenoid.

Wild guess here:

In the compartment on the driver's side forward of the wheel, there are a couple of terminal strips. The second terminal strip down is only active when the ignition switch is ON. It is fed by the ignition relay located top right near the compartment door. I would very carefully check all the connections involved with that relay including all the connections on that second terminal strip that it feeds, and the ground to the relay.

There is generally tension on the connectors on that relay - in my case they were enough to work most of the time. However, every once in a while, the relay would drop and everything on that second terminal strip would fail. Most of the stuff isn't generally ON and the failures weren't all that noticeable, but the amount of intermittent problems I had were driving me nuts until I found the pick to the relay was loose, actually very loose.

You could also have that same relay defective - not too expensive to replace. CC shows it as Ignition Relay P/N 51-11693-009.

Needless to say, I went on a "tighten everything electrical I could find" binge. Amazing how much stuff gets loose or dirty. I verified the voltage at the post for every connection and all the wires connected to it. Wound up cleaning more than a few because of the voltage drop.

Remember, it's 12 years old.

I think you have the same issue as I do with my 95 Magna. There is a coolant reservoir above the engine with a coolant level sensor. When the coach is level the sensor is submerged. When the coach is going up an incline or is leaning to the left, the coolant runs to the opposite side of the reservoir exposing the level sensor. There is about a 30 second delay before the engine electronics shut down the engine.

This happened to me several times before I noticed it only happened on inclines. There were no visual indications, but I did notice a fast, not very loud chime.

Dean, if you continue to have the problem, try burping the coolant system. My coach would send the coolant out the overflow until it created the situation you describe. On a sharp right hand turn the bells would go off and the engine shut down.

After spending $400 of mechanics time to unsuccessfully isolate the problem, I opened the bleed valves, removed the coolant cap, turned on the front heater, and ran the engine to expel any airlock. I guess the guy who did the coolant flush did not follow the program.

I have neither lost coolant, had any extreme water temperatures or had a shutdown in the last 10 months.
